Can anyone recommend a good steam iron.
Don't need a steam generator one but do want a good plain steam iron. I only iron occasionally but don't mind paying a reasonable price for a good one. It is years since I bought one and there are just so many I have no idea where to start!
Thanks

Asdas own brand Steam iron here, it does exactly what it says on the tin, powerful and self cleaning, we bought it to replace a Braun iron which was more expensive new, but not so powerful and left marks on clothing from where the footplate coating was wearing off. At around £20 new, it certainly is good value, and l would not hesitate to buy again.

I have just bought a Swan for around £20, which has a ceramic plate and seems fine for ordinary domestic use. My previous iron was a Morphy Richards and lasted a good 15 years. In the caravan I have a very cheap supermarket own brand one for the odd occasion I need to iron (as little as possible!). Again, that has been fine for what I bought it for.
I would always use filtered or bottled water as it prolongs the life of the iron - or, rather, tap water, especially if hard, will shorten it. Our home water is so disgusting anyway that we have a couple of jugs of filtered water always available. We even use it in the kettle as the chlorine taste permeates tea and coffee otherwise.

Always use basics bottled water in the iron as we live in a hard water area. Makes a big difference to the life of the iron.

My last 2 irons have been Tefal, I find them really good. The latest one is about 9 years old and was about £36.
It works a treat and takes tap water.

Tapwater is OK in areas that have "soft" water.
Hard water areas leave limescale deposits which clog up all the small steam holes, and so the iron needs cleaning out more frequently.
Use boiled water to prolong the cleaning intervals and the life of the iron.

I think mine was about a fiver from Tesco or Sainsburys or somewhere. Does what it is supposed to do...irons. Had it years and use ordinary tap water with no problems...not that I do much ironing these days. I often use a wet cloth rather than the steam especially on trousers otherwise they go shiny.
