Am I the only person who thinks the recently released version of the sound of silence by disturbed is awful?
I heard it for the first time the other day (before I heard the hype) and actually stayed in the room purposefully to listen.
I think it's great (and never thought I'd say that about a cover of a classic such as this one)!
Yes, they have started playing it on Radio 2, it's actually very good & it's endorsed by writer Paul Simon as "a fine cover version". I'm sure he is happy with the royalties as well.
As for there should be a ban on Kanye doing cover versions, you could leave "doing cover versions" off the sentence. He becomes more of an idiot with every passing moment.
As for classic songs that can be done very well (maybe not better, but just as well) I really like Sophie Elli Bextor covering Jolene: Jolene
I usually cringe at cover versions, BUT our choir recently sang a beautiful version of a Beatles song called 'In My Life'. THe original has no soul and is the victim of a need to be of the 'Mersey Beat' style.
I am not a Beatles fan at all, but I love 'In My Life'.
Sorry for those of you who like the Beatles.
Lennon and McCartney were talented song writers, thank the Lord for this arrangement.
I have to say that many pieces sung SATB by a choir can sound really, really naf but this work.
I much prefer sticking to sacred choral but just now and again there is a GEM.

I thought it was excellent and very powerful. It has captured the meaning of the words perfectly and related it to modern day. It is sad but not surprising that the words of a song written so long ago can still be relevant today. Actually more so.
Mixed feelings about it - I think because the original is so good.
Some cover versions should never have been allowed - Madonna American Pie is a prime example.
Yet other covers are better than the original.
Roberta Flack singing Bob Dylan's Just Like a Woman is superb - she captures all the pain and sorrow of a woman who has been hurt. Something that the original does not.
