We are into board games and related games. You can get packs of games small enough for travel anywhere now. Makes a change from standard card games. Weplay with children aged from 5 +. Munchkin loot letter, Hobbit love letter, Dalek Dice, builders, trains, all come to mind. Look at Amazon or a company called Board Games extras for a browse. believe you me they are captivating. Slightly bigger boxes are Carcassonne, Duck, duck go, & Tsuro. Keeps them going for hours.

I like Go Fish, we used to play Newmarket round my nan's when i was a kid for pennies, couldn't tell you the rules now though.
Do you have the same gran as me? I remember always being allowed to take all of the pennies home :)
We play bingo, each player is dealt 5 cards, 15 cards are dealt out in a pile, the caller uses these cards to play, turn them over, if you have the number or picture card you take it away, hopefully you might get all your 5 cards out and call bingo, if no one calls after the 15 cards have been turned start a new game, our kids love it. You can also play with coppers, whoever wins wins the pot, if no one wins the pot rolls over until it is won.
Scabby queen is a good one with kids, 4 players, ltake out 3 queens so you only are playing with one, shuffle the pack and deal them out, take out any pairs, the cards you are left with you then go around each player and take a card, if you get a pair you put it down, the idea is you need to get rid of the queen, whoever is left with the queen loses, you need to learn your poker face for this as you don't want to be left with it.
at FREEATLAST YES FOR 6 YEAR OLDS ?????
I have played cards since i could recognise numbers and suits. All of those games are easily playable with a 6 year old. Strip Jack is not a rude game its the game that a previous poster described where you lay 1 for a Jack 2 for a Queen etc
Cards are a great way to entertain children
Yep, I agree...my now 10 year old has been playing most of these games for years...I'll often come back from the shower to '15,1...15,2....and one for his knob' or something like that...I can't play cribbage, but she loves it. The hardest thing for kids is holding the cards.
We also enjoy pass the pigs, yahtzee, greed, white, backgammon and chess.
If you've got pens and paper we sometimes have a list like girls name, boys name, fruit, town, country etc and you can see if you can get them all starting with a particular letter.
