Well Kenny. I was up until 1:30 last night faffing with distros. I almost slept in for work.
So far I've gone through 9 and am trying out the tenth - Android.
The newest pclos mate is only 64 bit so no use on a 32 bit atom netbook. Tiny Linux was good apart from the keyboard init. Macpup was very good. Vector was a s flawed as ever. Mint was mint.
Android 6.0 installed very quickly and is booting as I type. Will see how it is.

Hi Ewan , out of the few I tried I liked the mint flavour best ,the original reason that I started looking at Linux systems was because both my Vista pcs had an update problem both of them would just search and search but not find any updates , a problem reported by Vista owners I wouldn't mind cracking that problem for the 64 bit system and probably run Mint on the 32 one , thanks for the update

Does Microsoft still support Vista. I know they stopped supporting XP. I think Vista is an embarrassment to them - bloated ans slow. It ran slower than the Xp it replaced. You might find windows 7 places less demands on the hardware and is a far more popular system. If I did want to run windows I prefer W7 to W8 or W10. You can get developers discs with genuine codes cheap from ebay. I wish I had stuck with W7 and not upgraded to W10, but I am happy with Mint Linux now.

I resisted all attempts by MS to get me to convert to W10. I have tried W10 and I don't like it, W7 is much better in my opinion, especially on old machines like mine. I am looking into trying Linux for when MS stop supporting W7.

Hi Colin , I run W10 on my laptop and quite like it , as regards Linux systems I am a complete novice but I do like Linux Mint , if you have been following this thread Ewan has a lot of experience of Linux and has been of great help to me on this subject

I'm not that bothered about dirty cow as I'm the only local user on my Linux boxes.
I am bothered about trying to get grub to work with Android.
