Both my wife and I have decided to go for 'Direct Cremation' after learning about it on another thread here. I have done some research and at the present time it can come in at a lot cheaper than £2000, however, if you want flowers or the ashes etc; the cost builds up which as far as I am concerned defeats the object.
As far as I understand it the body is taken directly from the mortuary to be cremated and nobody actually attends...no black limousines, no spouting vicars, hymns, flowers or tear jerking music. Why would you want them when you're dead?
My life insurance actually expires when I reach 70 years old later this year and I will be putting an equal amount, maybe a little more if I can afford it, into a joint bank account. If I take out another life insurance or a funeral plan it won't be payable for two years so I might as well put the money in the bank.
If the family wish to have a bit of a private knees up to celebrate my passing then it is up to them...bring a bottle!
I think sometimes the people left behind are just grateful for some hint of what the deceased would have liked, as they might not be in much of a state to make decisions. My Dad's prepaid funeral plan worked out okay; only extra I had to pay was the obituary in the local paper, only decisions to make were readings etc and where donations would go.

I wouldn't dream of dictating to my wife and kids how they mark my passing.
I agree and my family can mark my passing anyway they like at their own expense...I'll just pay for getting rid of my carcass as quickly as possible and not limousines, funeral directors or vicars
My wife and kids feel the same way so nobody is being done out of a decent funeral.

Donate your body to the nearest university with a medical school by filling in some paperwork. You're whipped away while you're still warm & you keep several students occupied for their entire course. Four years later, there's a mass funeral service, family can go if they wish, students pay their respects, and what little is left of all the bodies is cremated.
Zero financial cost to you or your family. Some emotional cost - OH won't get to say goodbye to his dad.
My son knows I want to be cremated and where I want my ashes spread. I've also told him to make it cheap - I'll be dead and past caring but, as Fiona says, funerals are for the mourners, not the dead. He knows the music I'd like and that, if there's a service, I'd want to have this at home. I'd rather money spent on the wake (as per my signature) but it's about what he needs to help him. He lost his Dad aged 7 and has lost both sets of grand-parents and six good friends since so I think cutting him some slack is a good idea.

I have instructed my nearest & dearest to just call the council to get rid of me. I dont want no funeral no nothing. Or donate myself for reserch , training etc if they would have me.
