He'd still show up a motorcycle events and ride in a parade lap until well into old age, according to Mr Fran. Mr Fran's dad used to race sidecars up until the early 60s, and Surtees was an absolute hero to him.
Despite growing up very near West Wickham, Mr Fran didn't know that Surtees had a repair shop there, though!
My Mum who is 91 called me today to tell me .
He was all that made Britain great (H & S take note).
Met him briefly once at Manchester Classic Bike show, a very unassuming man.
I am not going to say very sad.
That man can look down and think"Job done"

I met him once, he was running a bike up Shelsley Walsh hillclimb. No airs or graces, no big I am, he was just happy to enjoy running his 'bike up the hill and chatting to people. He must have been in his mid sixties by then and he didn't hold back from giving his bike The Full Beans and putting in a very respectable time.
