I come across a load of signs saying "new road lay out ahead" - some have been there for at least six years and one is gloriously rusted! And then there's the sign on the A68 heading south where you turn right after Byrness. It warns of blind summits, etc., which is factual but the sign also says 75 deaths on the road - that's not changed in 40 years and I'm not joking. The latest death on that road occurred only a few weeks ago. It's meant as a warning, but how much better would it be if they gave accurate figures through a slot in updated figures sign?
I can't be the only one who wonders what effect the 'death stats' on road signs have. Wouldn't a 'Slow Down, Dangerous Bends (or whatever)have more impact? Don't we have enough traffic signs to read without our attention as drivers being taken away from looking where we are going simply to read what is essentially an information notice?
