Which development was that? The main problem on Lewis is the lack of an interconnrctor. Why shouldn't we harness our natural resources. Tourism is fine but it won't sustain a community for ever.

Oh Debs, please. I live in Devon, we depend on tourism, and have done for a very, very long time. Me personally, I hate it, but I am a realist, so I guess I have to put up with it.

I think you mean Faslane though I don't know where you will put it. Take it. I'm sure you would love having that on your doorstep. You could always use the subs as electricity generators.
Oh, and Devonport has been ruled out as a base by the MOD.
Personally, I wouldn't want to live somewhere that is fracked, full of nukes and polluted.

I sincerely apologise for pronouncing Faslane wrongly, it was not deliberate.

But on my doorstep! Mmmmm, I live 25 miles away from Plymouth (correct name) Ewen. Have a little Google, please do not preach to me what is on my doorstep. How naive. Sorry, but that was a very stupid comment.

You mentioned a wind farm development on Lewis. Just interested to know where you got your figures! Stop being so patronising.

Debs, please search for the information, I have just read the full report. I will leave that to you.

But, sorry, please do not tell me to be so patronising. That is dictatorial, and as a proud Englishman....You will not tell he what to do.

Sorry, I love Scottish people, my kids are half Scottish. But no orders please.

Sorry to rain on your parade, Ewen, but we stopped a wind farm on Mull and we're very unlikely for the foreseeable future to be considered as a possible location as legislation has been tightened with regard to our wild areas.

I presume you've been over lately so you'll know that the M74 is wind farm alley and as far as I'm concerned Caithness is a no go area. One thing I will say for wind farms is that the roads that are made are far superior to most of the trunk roads in Scotland - very wide and, although not tarmac, smoother. Whether one likes the scars on the landscape is neither here nor there.

As to your comment about Scotland taking wind farms - are you willing to pay the extra 2p per KW/hour we get charged by the National Grid for lecky?

I lived even closer to Faslane.
Seriously, the MOD ruled Plymouth out as a base for Trident in case of an accident. It seems Argyll, Dunbartonshire and Ayrshire doesn't count.

I think you should take them though and the weapons storage facilities and you can break them when they're obsolete with all the mess that goes with it. It only took decades to clean up the Holy Loch. Who knows how long it will take at Rosyth.

Nuclear power stations in Ireland?
I am not happy about fossil fuel power in Ireland. That is probably why I voted Green at the last election and use eirtricity.

I suppose you don't like forestry tracks either. I don't but I recognise they have to be there.
We can't keep polluting where we live. We have to find a clean way to provide our energy.

Sorry Ewen, I did not realise you voted "Green"

You are, obviously, right. There is absolutely no point in engaging in debate, discussion or even argument on the subject of anything involving the environment, despite my career of over 34 years dealing with it.

I therefore submit to your far superior knowledge, after all.....You voted Green.

That's me done, lost, indeed shattered. Tail well between my legs, so what it now for me. I guess back to the countryside and wildlife I love, with stunning views of..........Wind Turbines.

I guess I will learn to love them, when they are level with the ground.

so,why does the government not talk to the car manufacturers.Back in the 90's,main dealers LPG'd cars at the factory,so why can we not do it again?I drive a diesel, but, will change for a petrol,if and when it is required.Petrol will go up,as will diesel to force diesel cars off the road.So go to LPG,but, the price will go up wont it.The government could lower the duty on petrol to get people to swap, but, thats too easy.54p in every litre,is tax,so,why not, halve it,to get people to change? The government want all this doing by us,so,they must do their bit,by helping us all out.

If this will help, I did have a petrol Freelander and got an LPG conversion, so dual fuel. However, because the HSE, etc., requirements on LPG, there was no LPG on the island so it was only useful when I went on mainland trips. That was okay, but at that time, there were very few LPG filling stations on the roads I had to use. When that car went to its rest, I needed a car urgently and all I could get was a diesel and, having had one, I'm reluctant to change.

I don't live or work in a city but I do volunteer as a first aider and safety marshal in remote locations. I can do over 800 miles from Friday morning to Sunday night and have to have an off-road capable vehicle. I've not been able to find an affordable hybrid/EV that can deal with that.

I fully appreciate that most people live in urban environments and do sympathise with the air pollution problem (used to work in London). But that is no excuse to crucify rural dwellers. I'll happily use park and ride where available (and affordable) if I have to go into a city centre.
