OH has to renew his driving licence, I assume that he can't renew online as he has an Irish passport. Does anyone know for sure to save queuing at the post office? can it be renewed at any post office, or only the main ones?
I renewed mine at a post office a couple of yrs ago. They take the photo as well. Only certain post offices do this. If you read licence application form it tells you how to find your nearest po that does licence renewals.

I never would have guessed you are Irish
OH is, not me, but funnily enough I have done an Ancestry DNA test which says that I am 39% Irish! I know that Dad (who was Scottish) had some ancestors from NI, but Mum always maintained that she was Welsh through and through. If she had a grave she would be turning in it now! Actually OH is a quarter German, half Irish, half English and was born on Donegal.

A foreign national can renew UK driving licence at a post office that does renewals. Licence cannot be renewed online without a UK passport.
Are you sure about that? I don't have a passport and I have recently renewed my driving licence online prior to reaching the age of 70.
Did you renew it using government gateway? It seems to be a new thing requiring passwords that they send you in 2 letters? I had to do all that recently to claim my old age pension online. I tried to do it by phone but after 20mins of not answering I gave up & did it online with this gateway palaver that they now require for everything done online on .gov website apparently. It now states UK passport required for online driving licence renewal. Presumably if you don't have one then you renew by post or post office?

I know I did it online using a gateway password thing so now I have an 'account' which I presume I can access any time I want to renew now that licences for over 70's only last 3 years. I was sent a reminder letter initially which I think may have contained an access code. It was only about 2 months ago and I'm struggling to remember...must be getting old. Certainly didn't need a passport anyway and there must be loads of people don't have passports.
Sooo pead off as can’t renew my driving licence online as have an Irish passport, so have to got to go to post office and pay extra £7.50 . Reason I have Irish passport is because 1 my dad was Irish and in the RAF and as I was born in Australia at that time and my dad serving in RAF there decided to register me Irish. I came to live permanently in uk when I was about 10 , and now 58 ..also iv never been to Ireland lol .
What is it with the passport, is this a new thing? I don't have a passport at all, as mine ran out in 2014. I have been renewing my driving licence by post as up until recently I had a PSV licence which had to be renewed annually since I was 65. I am now over 70 and my car licence runs out again next year. Only thing I have had to pay for was my annual medical for the PSV licence, the licence renewal itself is free.
This is a rave from the grave! OH is of course 1/4 German, 1/4 English, half Irish! German surname which we always have to spell. We did renew his licence at Cirencester PO. Never did his ancestry DNA to find if there is anything else. OH, and my very Welsh Mum had an English mother!

You only need a passport to renew your licence on line.

I renewed my licence a year ago (aged 70) on line. I do not have a passport. The DVLA site asks for a passport number and accesses your passport photo to print on the new licence.
If you are not a passport holder but previously held a photocard licence, you answer additional security question(s) and your new licence is issued bearing the same photo as your previous licence.
I received my new licence within a couple of days.
