I'm trying to renew UK expired passport online and govt website bounces you from pillar to post with most pages stating they will only issue for compassionate reasons ie funerals or for govt business ie MP's etc.
Anyone doing/done application recently...online/paper/in person.. would love any tricks n tips please???
I have recently renewed 3 of ours and the website said the same but I just carried on with the application online, and they all arrived within 3 weeks. I think I just ignored the parts where it said they were only issuing for urgent reasons etc and carried on.
Several of the options (including renewal) go through to a point - then they loop you back to home page /make a call GRR!!
If you choose 'OTHER' when giving the reason for the application, it lets you proceed as normal and yes, just ignore the warnings. Also now checks the photo suitability immediately for you - first one was just outside the good range so tried another and success!! Just have to post old passport to them so they can begin process!
BBC app today says there’s a backlog of 400,000 applications. And the Passport Office recommends that only people travelling in September or on compassionate grounds should apply for now. Even if you apply online, the new passport still has to be processed & posted out.
OH applied for his renewal about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Within a day he got a message to say that the application had been received and was progressing and to send off his old one. Within a week of sending that off, his old one was returned and his new one turned up a day later. He was kept informed by email all through the process. Unless things have changed in the past few weeks, there should be no problem.

Old post, but I’ve just renewed my passport & I’m impressed: credit where it’s due.
I got the digital photo in the booth on Wednesday afternoon last week & then went online to fill out the simple form on my iPhone that evening. The new passport is being delivered tomorrow: Wednesday morning. I’ve been impressed by the communication from the Passport Office all the way, and it was so much easier than renewing 10 years ago.
A good few years ago now, I had to spend most of a day at the Irish embassy to renew OH's. He couldn't make it. Can't remember how I was able to do it on his behalf.
I did mine at the Post Office earlier in the year, it was back within a week. You pay a bit more but worth it for the time saved.
OH due to renew soon, before next year.
I renewed mine in July as it was due to run out in November. I did it online and had the new one in a week. They keep you informed of the progress by text or e mail.
