Just thinking, if this saw is so badly wrong, perhaps trading standards should be informed to save someone having a nasty accident.

Glad you have decided on a handsaw, much safer.

Also good to know you are checking your wiring polarity. If that is wrong then maybe some knowing amateur. has been having a go at it sometime in the past.

the polarity is OK everywhere in the cottage
the extension cord to my modem is 2core and the tester showed 'no earth' connection; which is correct so all's well.!

Glad to hear house wiring is OK. I would have been surprised if there had been a problem, unless, as previously mentioned, an "expert" amateur had been having a go at it.

You would be surprised at the no of domestic premises that have reverse polarity somewhere in the installation, not all of them done by expert amateurs.

I once did some work for a friend, and discovered that the extension he'd had built a few years earlier had been wired up without the earth connected back to the fuse-board. All the sockets had been connected properly to each other, same with the ceiling roses, but the earth connections hadn't been run back to the board. The extension included their new kitchen, but the only thing that was earthed in there was the cooker point! That job had been done by so called "professionals" from what was then called the electricity board. It was too late to do anything about it because several years had passed since he'd had it done, and he's been completely unaware until I showed him.

I think its just a case of the OP's saw being faulty. I had a non-branded chop-saw, where i only had to cut timber in damp weather, and i got a belt. I took the switch assembly to bits and found some totally bare wires and condensation on the underside of the cover. I sorted the wires, and sealed the cover. No more belts!
