I called at our local caravan shop yesterday, as i have been waiting to buy a new jockey wheel. I was looking forward to having a good look around, given it has been closed for many months. When i got there the shutters were down, i couldnt believe it. The sign on the door said CLOSED Wednesdays! Have they really not lost enough money lately? My god, if that was my shop, i dont think i'd close the doors for a month, let alone stick to my 'closed Wednesdays' routine.

It could be that they trade on Saturday and Sundays which is when most people visit so the staff need at least one day off which the best day for them is obviously mid-week on a Wednesday. I know what you are saying about losing money during the last year but at the end of the day the people who employed are only human and deserve a break like everyone else does.

And just maybe they're ensuring that they and their staff are in a position to fit all the covid rules and regulations? Some of them are quite onerous and, let's face it, there's a load of people out there who will moan if they perceive a place isn't following the rules (even if it's the complainer who's at fault). Witnessed a classic example of the latter yesterday.

They do trade at weekends, but its never the same staff. As for 'needing a break', haven't they just had about 4-5 months sat doing nothing? And they are never rushed off their feet when they are at work. There is rarely more than 3 people in the shop at the best of times, covid or not.

My local caravan shop has a good online presence & probably has greater volume of online sales than customers going to the shop so probably shop opening not so important.

I would disagree with that. I bought the jockey wheel yesterday. Had i seen it online first, i would definitely not have bought it, because it would have appeared too cheap. On visually inspecting it, it is actually far better quality than i would have expected for the price, and therefore bought it.

Having read this thread Graham, I take the liberty of posting what you could have written.

On Wednesday, without checking their opening hours first, I went to my local caravan shop to purchase a jockey wheel. Unfortunately they were closed on Wednesday, as is their normal practice. I subsequently returned to the store when they were open and purchased a jockey wheel at a price I consider to be low, given it's quality.

Thank you Graham for reminding me why, after 25 years in customer facing service industry roles, I decided that I never wanted another job that involved dealing with the general public.

For the remainder of my working life I only had to tolerate the sh*t from owners and management.

Thanks for your interpretation of my words. My interpretation of your own would be: I didnt have it in me to run my own business. I much preferred to work for, and make money for someone else. Taking their sh*t on the way.

You could be right, I should have set up my own caravan shop, open 6 days a week including Sunday, and had a day off on Wednesday.

What I would have done is looked at the jockey wheel in the shop then looked for a cheaper price online & bought the jockey wheel online which will be why the caravan shop is opening less hours & concentrating on it’s online business maybe ?

I think you are all missing the most obvious and convenient solution. Go down the road to the caravan shop - which is open - and buy a whole brand new caravan and take the jockey wheel off that.

Job sorted. I got one of those Dyson 'ball' vacuum cleaners and adapted the base of that. I drilled a hole in the plastic ball, and filled it with a rubber resin. It moves much easier in any direction, and will never break.
