Social diary cleared for the next month or so, and I am packing them in before this coming Friday, including postponement of the camping trip in June 2021 to October 2021.

I have placed the bits and pieces for the new dog in the house, including the crate and dog bed, so that the cat can get used to them.

We have an elderly cat, and did some preparation before bringing home the bouncy 4 year old rescue cocker. Catís food area is out of dogís reach. We kept them in separate rooms when the dog came home. Smelling under the door... Come bed time, dog went into her crate with the Bonio (having checked she was ok with it), and cat was let into the same room for the night. Thereafter, careful observation of body language. And - most important - stroke one then the other, over & over, to transfer each otherís taste & smell between them. It took several weeks, but theyíre fine now. Not particularly pals, but TH tolerate each other. Cat sleeps in dogís open crate during the day.
Good luck. Persevere. Itíll be worth it.

That is very useful, thank you!

I have installed a child gate so that the cat can have some dog-free area. I shall put the spare litter tray in the bathroom for her.

I have planned to separate the two and introduce them gently to each other under supervision.

Fingers firmly crossed that she will let him stay! Hopefully she can be bribed with roast chicken and lots of cuddles.

When we lived in Norfolk we had 3 cats and 2 dogs all living together. We had the cats first, one being the mother of the other two, then we got a rescue dog. A year later we got another rescue dog. Both the dogs had been pups when we got them. They all got on fine, and I well remember seeing them all curled up together in a big furry heap in front of the coal fire we had then.

I also remember one of the dogs, a Collie cross, trying to round up the cats! She couldn't quite make it out when they shot up the curtains to get away.
