I just phoned Nationwide and was eventually put through to the "European section".

They stated categorically that the 8m limit is the COMBINED length.

We have a Honda CRV, which is 4.6m long, so I would only be covered for a 'caravan' of 3.4 !!!

Not impressed.

They are wrong but it is not them doing the breakdown service. It is now the AA so phone them. 0330 159 1959. You can put the AA app on your phone & register as a Nationwide customer.

I agree the wording on the t&cs is a bit ambiguous. Ie

These dimensions will be calculated taking into account anything attached to your vehicle and any trailer or caravan, including but not limited to towing equipment, any carriers or racks (e.g. bike or luggage), or anything else attached to the vehicle or the carriers/racks.

However I now have phoned them & they have confirmed that it means 8mtres for tow vehicle & 8mtres for caravan separately. They confirmed they will recover a broken down car with caravan attached & that caravan can be up to 8mtres long.

The number in my previous post is the number for NW customers to ring if broke down. That is also the number to ring if you have any breakdown cover specific questions. For breakdowns abroad it is +44 330 159 1958. HTH.
