I have a neck problem, arthritis and old injury. I find it very difficult to find a pillow which is comfortable for me to have a good night’s sleep. I often wake up with a headache and neck pains.I have wasted money trying to find a pillow which suits me. I have googled and found a number of companies offering the perfect pillow but they are very expensive.I don’t want to waste any more money.
Has anyone had a similar problem and eventually found a great pillow? I would really appreciate your advice.Thank you.
I'm fortunate not to suffer from arthritis (at least yet), but otherwise had the same issues for years, trying all kinds of pillows.
About 4-5 years ago, I purchased wool pillows from Baavet.co.uk & have been really comfortable since. They do need regular 'fluffing up' of the internal wool pieces which tend to clump together, but for me it's well worth the effort. My wife, who also suffered from neck aches, subsequently bought the same & is also very pleased.
Obviously everybody's neck issues can be different, but I hope the suggestion at least gives you a starting point.
Good luck.
Is there a Dunelm near you ? They have a good selection of reasonably priced memory foam moulded pillows. I got one that suits me. The moulded type with dip in middle so neck is supported on the edge.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Looking at the problem from the opposite direction, a good physiotherapist might help: our GP practice has an in-house one that you can self refer to. My own physio says he’s seen lots of people with neck issues since WFH started, because they’re looking down at laptops on their knees for hours, when the screen should be up at eye level. I appreciate that that’s not what’s causing the OP’s neck problems but it might relieve some pain if anything is pinched.
Pillows appear to be designed for back, side or front sleepers, so OH and I need different pillow firmness & thickness: he has 2 but that gives me a crick in the neck. I can’t therefore advise on a suggested type.
Thank you for your posts,I’m in my eighties so seen many physios and had MRI scans etc but nothing further can be done. I bought two pillows from Dunelm a couple of days ago. They were just normal pillows but no good for me. I must look again.
We have Soak & Sleep pillows and although I have arthritis I find them very comfortable. We also bought a down duvet from them. https://www.soakandsleep.com/
I had a bad accident many years ago which left me with a weakness in my shoulder and a neck prone to getting painful at the drop of a hat! A few years ago I decided to try one of those shaped pillows, a bit like this one. I am not promoting this specific pillow, I am just using that link as an example of the type of pillow I bought, and it has been fantastic for me. I rarely have any neck pain any more and I seem to sleep very well. Sometimes I sleep with the larger side under my neck but most often, I use the shallower side.
However, when I bought it, it was on offer where you could get a second one for a much reduced price so we got one for my husband as well and he has never been able to get used to it and disliked it immensely so I guess it is really what works for each individual.
My husband not liking it actually worked out rather well as I now have one at home and one in the caravan to save me having to remember to take it with us when we go away!

That's shaped just like the one I have in the caravan, and I usually sleep well on it. I have had neck and shoulder problems for many years and I've been told that nothing can be done so I'm quite fussy with pillows.
I have the same problem and have tried many pillows. I didn't get on with any of the memory foam or feather ones as I find the support flattens out during the night.
The McKenzie Cervical Roll was good for me. Its designed to keep the cervical spine in good alignment, used with a normal pillow. I think it costs about £14. Of course it has to be the right size for your neck and everyone is different. I used one for a number of years and found it really comfortable and prevented the nerve pain and spasm I was getting.
Having said that I didn't replace my last one. I now use a normal flatish pillow together with a small rectangular polyester fibre cushion which is just the right size to tuck in the crook of my neck and gives the support I need.
I find a Spanish pillow works for me, higher so my head is a bit higher than 1 UK pillow (no sore neck) but not as high as 2 UK pillows (no sore head). Also half the width so it isnt under my shoulder.
