I hope someone can answer this question, as I can't find any info online.

We had a 1st generation meter installed years ago, the monitor stopped working when we changed suppliers, then we were asked to submit readings which were often estimated when we were away.

Now we have been switched to Eon Next and they say we have a smart meter.

Can a smart meter go dumb and then become live again with a new supplier? I thought it was usually the other way round. Confused.com

Not as far as I know. Eon will have to give you a new generation smart meter, but they’ll find that out soon enough when no readings are coming through.

I suspect that what you are calling a smart meter is just the display for the actual meter situated somewhere near to the electrical intake. If EON can 'see' your smart meter that is all they are worried about. Just tell them that your display does not work and they will arrange for a new one to be supplied.

OP will have a SMETS1 meter which was tied to their original supplier, so swapping suppliers meant it went dumb as the new supplier couldn't receive the data.

SMETS2 is the current standard which isn't tied to a supplier and all suppleirs can read the data.

SMETS1 is being upgraded to SMETS2 remotely so chances are the old meter data can be read by Eon next.

Thanks both, we have received statements which tally with the meter readings. This seems very strange when other companies have asked for readings, so it seemed that the meters had gone dumb. Birder, I know that is just the monitor, I have been asking for one for ages and got nowhere.

Perhaps Eon will give us one.

I can’t remember what company we were with when we got our first smart meter a number of years ago. However, when we switched to Avro, it stopped working and we had no smart readings for the time we were with them. Sadly, Avro went under a few months ago and we were switched to Octopus and lo and behold, after the switch, the smart meter started working again so I think it might depend on the energy company which seems a bit weird!

Yes very possible. The supplier at the time it was not working probably did nti have the software to connect to the meter. the new current supplier doe shave the software so meter has come to life again. Current supplier can also change it status from one rate to tow rate remotely if requested by yourselves and without a visit.

The staff probably will not know whether the Smart meter worked with the previous company so see no need for notification which is understandable.

We had a meter fitted by Ovo many years ago. Changed to another supplier who advised they did not work with smart meters so I had to submit readings, which was a nuisance. Then changed to Octopus and the meter is now working as it should.

Just a question of whether your supplier is yet using these meters.

when changing to AVRO ...several year ago all was good with a new metre and the little digital screen supplied, subsequent change to another supply and several since there was no compatability, last supplier Utility Point , "supply a reading please!!"went down with many, now transferred to EON and we are still on the "submit a reading "thing since their take over of UP in September

In a Uswitch survey 39% of users had problems with smart meters!
Until the energy suppliers offer better rates for having one I can't see any advantage.

No, when it didn’t work after the switch to Avro, we left it plugged in and just forgot about it! When it sprang to life again on the switch to Octopus it was certainly a surprise.
