Recently I've been hearing a loud knocking sound coming from somewhere in the garden. Yesterday, I discovered a greater spotted woodpecker 'attacking' an old nest box on one of the ash trees. The nest box has a round hole on one side, but the woodpecker seems determined to make a new hole on the front of the box. I tried to get a photo, but there is too much shade round the box.
I've heard woodpeckers quite often this year. Back in Hampshire, we would get Green woodpeckers in our garden, but not this far north.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
We’ve only got that woodpecker up here, not the green or the lesser. Saw one at the bird feeders at Culzean last Sunday: bonny bird.
BTW you could have put this onto the long running Nature thread!
We get greater spotted woodpeckers here in the Scottish Borders, they certainly make a noise.
A lot of people do not like them because they peck their way into nesting boxes and eat the eggs and baby birds, but that's nature. It's similar with herons which we have a lot of around here, they eat the baby ducklings.
We have only ever seen a woodpecker in our garden once in 30 years, but we hear them from the local woods. Herons on the other hand are quite a common sight along the nearby riverbank. When our former neighbour opposite had a pond in his garden Herons used to sit on his roof watching the pond, until he put wire netting over it.
