hi , all,
i am wanting to update my phone sim card, from a pay-as-you-go, to a monthly contract, as the pay-as-you-go prices have rocketed, and whilst using my phone as a sat nav, i just eats into the money ive loaded on.
sky mobile do a contract, of £6 per month with 2gb of data, or £7 per month with 3gb data, and so on , the unused data also rolls over to the next month, so when in winter time, i wont be using the sat nav, so data will roll over to springtime, when i will be using it for long trips.
so my question is, how long will 2gb or3gb of data last whilst using google maps, in ,say, time or distance?
i know i can download a route, then switch off data usage, been dooing that lately, but if you go off the chosen route for any reason, it wont reroute, and just locks up trying to find location, so its not much cop , as far as thats concerned.
anyone a bit more "phone savvy" than me ,explain, what 2 or 3 gb data would get me?
thanks- Stu

Why not buy a dedicated satnav then you will not be using any mobile data?
Google maps keeps up to date on things like roadworks: holdups are instantly shown because they’re based on the location / movement of the phone in each car.
I’ve also used my phone for walking to sites or friends in towns that I don’t know.

yeh, i already have an old tom-tom, but they are not live maps, they dont show traffic hold ups,and you have to keep updating the maps for road alterations, google maps is always live
We normally drive using our Garmin Dezl sat nav when we are towing. However, far better when not towing is the ipad. I do not have one of these fancy phones) I have the version that accepts a data sim so can use it while touring. Never had a contract for this, but as we have been away nearly every month this summer, I bought an EE data sim from Argos. £50 for 50Gb and lasts for 12 months. I bought it in May and have used about half the data.
This has allowed me to use the maps, email, browsing and Facetime calls to my brother every evening of about 30-40 minutes.
I agree with other posters that a dedicated sat nav is far better than google maps , but for free who can really complain?
Also if you have a modern car like my son, it has a built in sat nav plus Apple play so he can also use google maps on his in car screen.
But I would go for another deal like the link I have posted.
Ooops, bit of a typing error on my previous posting.
The EE data only sim is £50 for 120Gb, much better deal than my stated 50Gb.
As a matter of interest, when we were in New Zealand, latter part of 2019, touring in a motor home, we found the iPad far superior to the supplied sat nav.
Did you know you can download a area of Google maps as offline maps? I do this as a back up and they work just like the live maps as long as you are within the area of the offline match.
You can download as many as you like to cover your trip and they also automatically update when you are on wifi
