Never used it to find a location, just use my sat nav, but it is a very useful app to have on your phone for sure. People like the emergency services and breakdown services use it to locate you if you are in a more remote are, and can be a lifesaver. 👍
Not for sites or pitches, but handy for postcodes where one side of the road is one code and the other is another. In fact anywhere one an area boundary. So round here we have Ol codes abutting M and HD codes same road. Houses facing each other pay different rates for the same houses.
Could be useful when looking for a location where the postcodes are spread out.

Not used What3words in my search for a campsite, but use it all the time for arranging rendezvous with people (I do rescue dog transports, and have to meet others in places neither of us know well, in the relay of drivers who cover the entire run).
I'd certainly use it to check the location of a campsite if they published their W3W code, it's FAR more use than a postcode for pinpointing a location.
As to the aerial view, I always check out sites on Google Streetview and Satellite to judge accessibility and layout.
I have an app on my phone and the tablet I use with OS maps that gives an OS map reference for any location in UK.
On finding a newly smashed up and abandoned Landrover Discovery on a North Downs bylaw I reported it to the police and giving them the OS map reference.
A few days later I got a call from the police asking how to find the location, it seems they can't use maps.
Not for sites, however, I have used it for logging hard to find places where the Post Code is not sufficiently detailed/reliable, like a layby to access a dog training facility.

It's the location app for finding houses & gardens listed on the Historic Houses Association website. Not all of us can find map links, What3Words works without an internet connection. I think....

I have also advised mum to keep a note of the words for her home if needed for emergency services. Postcodes are not very accurate in her rural area and she often gets deliveries for a nearby house with the same number further along the road.
W3W will work with Google Maps. Find the location in the app and tap navigate which will then give the option of using Google maps.

ive tried what you have just said gone to google maps gone to my location and that is where none of that works at all, no navigate button to press anywhere on google maps, you are going to have to explain better how to do/find this
I don't use it to find campsites but I use it all the time at work. I also use online OS maps but many of the sites I work have either no or very slow mobile data connection. W3W uses less data than OS maps and is great for finding one particular spot in the field or forest I am working in.
I’ve read about a group of folk getting lost in a forest, the rescue services asked for the W3W and found them easily. If you don’t know where you are, you can’t give an OS grid reference.
As others have said, it’s more accurate than the postcode in sparsely populated areas.

I'm using it on my phone.
I typed the name of a site in search, then tapped navigate. Google maps opened with the pin on the sight and the direction button below.
Another way for some sites is to simply type the name into Google maps as a lot are listed.
To use w3w phone or tablet / laptop / computer search ( w3w ) that's all you need. the site can then be used for location or navigation.
So put in campsite address and it will find it, you can then transfer to google maps / citymapper / bing maps / waze. You choose.
Google maps opens at the present location you are searching on and you carry on as normal from there on Google maps.
