I’m travelling to the Netherlands, not towing .
We live between Shrewsbury and Chester ( in Whitchurch . )
Any information about either crossing and distance to ferry port also road conditions and service stops .
Thank you
If I wanted to go to Holland I wouldn't start in Shropshire!
However another vote for Hull. Motorway/dual carriageway for almost the whole journey. The trick is avoiding rush hour as M60/62 around Manchester and to Leeds can be awful. Once past Ferrybridge the M62 is usually a breeze.
Same on way back, avoid Leeds until after 8.30am, check for any accidents on M62 and have an alternative route planned just in case of yet another accident causing delays.
Harwich probably much cheaper. Particularly day crossing. Leaves 9am so checkin by 8am. Leave yours dead early 3am you will be there by 7am. All good road. Mostly motorway & dual carriageway. Return crossing leaves at 14.15.
Overnight ferry from Harwich will definitely be cheaper than Hull. Sails at 23.00hrs. Arrives 08.00 local time. Adds about another 140 miles round trip compared with drive to Hull.
Done Zeebrugge to Hull, which was very handy getting home when we were in West Yorkshire. Easy off and away (if you're coming back). Harwich is a long drag, with more wagons in your way.
Harwich will be half the price of Hull, which is sad for me as the Hull ferry is only a 10min drive away.
I am looking to go camping to the Netherlands in the next year or two, we went around 5 years ago and sailed from Hull, but the prices have skyrocketed since then, so it will probably be Harwich or Dover this time as it will be cheaper even once you factor in the additional fuel and an overnights stay in a Premier inn the night before.
I'm going Holland in October. I live further North on the Wirral, I've been looking at both Hull and Harwich Route. ive been leaning towards Harwich route.

Going to the continent isnt 'cheap', so i cant understand why folk would drive further to 'save money on a ferry. Ok, technically money might still be saved even after fuel costs. But surely its extra hassle; more traffic, possible hold ups, starting out earlier, ratty kids in the back, etc etc. Once im going somewhere, i want to get there by the easiest and quickest route with the least obstacles to getting to the destination.

Thank you I think due to costs it will be Harwich even with the extra 1 hour travelling .
Unless they have some better offers
I've been having a rethink. The Harwich route, does the price include the cabin.
I may now go to Hull, after work for the night sail.

I've used both in the past travelling from Bolton when visiting the Netherlands and Germany. Even allowing for the M62 traffic Hull is a much quicker route for me. We always regard the overnight ferry as part of the holiday experience and the price wouldn't be the determining factor for me.
Reviewing my original statement, it all depends on when you travel. During school term times the price difference between Hull and Harwich is negligible. But the big saving come during school holidays. A return trip from Harwich is about £250 cheaper if you choose an over night trip and around £650 cheaper if you sail during the day.
