10 days ago we had a bird fall down 1 of our chimneys,It's still alive but not making a lot of noise apart from a bit of flapping.We don't have an open fire or a wood burner or even an old style gas fire the fire is an immitation coal fire consisting of a steel box with a fire grate in It gives off heat rather than being decorative.
When the poor bird starts flapping wife gets really upset so I said tomorrow I'd do something about it,the question is who, a plumber (it's a gas fire) a chimney sweep,the RSPCA won't do anything,or do we just leave it to it's fate. I know that sounds a bit cruel apparentley a small bird would expire in a couple of days but pigeons could last 2 weeks.Please advise.

OH says it is easier to push down so maybe a chimney sweep? There are bird specialists around, don't know if they would be any help.

It’s why we have tough mesh around all our chimneys that are still in use (installed by our chimney sweep) the rest being capped.

Leaving the bird to die in a gas flue could mean you'll be carbon monoxiding yourselves next winter when you've forgotten all about it.
Since this is a gas fire you'll need a gas fitter.

Well after a night fearing the worst fireplace out and the costs involved,I took the dog for his morning walk,just along the road a plumber was working.I had a word with him and explained what had happened he said he was busy today and could call on thursday absolutely fine.
Continued the dogs walk did a bit of tidying in garden and it was lunch.About to make a cuppa and there was a knock at the door there stood the plumber,job this afternoon was going to take him ages so he called in. He looked at fireplace yes no problem fetched his kit dis mantled the fire grabbed hold of the pigeon took it outside and let it fly off,10 days it has been in there what's it ate or had a drink anyway It's gone, wife happy plumber happy he was finished for the day and I was happy cost £45 an hours work Result thanks for replies

Blimey! Lucky result for you and the pigeon. A smaller bird would have croaked, which would bring you a different set of problems.... I had this happen twice when I had an old open fire; magpies both times. One went hysterical all over the living room having come down into the fireplace (it was apprehended with aid of teatowel and evicted). the other was stuck on the narrow bit so a chimney sweep got to work and the bird was ejected from the top and flew off very sooty. After that I had one of those cage things fitted round the chimney pot so it could not happen again.
