Shocked is not the word I used when crossing to the Isle of Wight monday.
Fish and Chips onboard at £15 a portion.
I declined to pay £12.50 a portion at the campsite clubhouse, instead we had breakfast at Sainsbugs where daughter used her colleague discount card, then shopped for supplies to see us through the next few days.
I thought £15 for fish n chips twice at our local chippy was bad enough.
Fridays fish supper will be Bird's Eye cod in batter and oven chips.
------------- Knowledge is recognising that a tomato is a fruit: experience is not putting it in a fruit salad.
We don’t have cod up here, generally speaking (unless you get ALDI frozen which is very good). Most of our fish n chips is haddock. And £12 for a fish supper from the corner chippy is pretty standard.
Welcome to the South! - £15 a head is NOT expensive (easy to pay more!) by general standards, far too much I agree, but that's the cost of living in the South, extortionate!
Pal of mine who lives near Hull and I compare F and C prices and portions sizes from time to time, he'll get twice the size portion (looks like a whale!) for near half the price (for something more like a jumbo fish finger!) that I have to pay (or more likely refuse to pay!), it'll be a DIY job from the supermarket if that's what I really want to eat!

I remember that too! It was that price for some years too, whereas these days things like that seem to go up every week.
Fresh food can be grown on the IOW.
The supermarkets will tend to absorb the cost of ferry crossings without charging much extra on the IOW.
Fresh fish has to be imported on a daily or weekly basis, the ferry toll on a van increasing the price of fish there.
I know some places do lunch and pensioner deals, but that is much cheaper than I ever see these days!
Except… I did have hake and chips for £7-99 at Harry Ramsden in Eastbourne this week, and very good it was too. Big piece of good quality fish, more chips than I could eat, all excellently cooked (fish cooked to order) by friendly staff.
The only time we may buy Fish and chips is when away in the caravan as have found it is far too pricy for the quality of the fish in many places. It is now at a stage where eating at home the food is tastier and a lot cheaper to cook and eat than buying a take away.
Rock Salmon or Dogfish/Bull Huss among other previously unwanted fish all sold under the name of Rock Salmon fishing was banned because it was considered endangered, it has only recently been re-introduced since the war in Ukraine as fish imports from Russia have been banned.
You may well see it at the Chippy in the near future.

We find that Fish and Chips in the Midlands is far more expensive than that at many seaside resorts and even though the latter is far more tasty it's about two thirds of the price for the same size portion anyway. We rarely have Fish and Chips locally anymore due to the escalated prices but it's always on the agenda and enjoy them whenever we visit the coast. You can't beat fresh tasty white fish in a dry crispy batter with delicious chips that are not over cooked and that's what we always seem to get at the majority of chippies at coastal resorts in the UK.
Perhaps we will have some at Wells next the sea on our next trip. We have a chippy at the bottom of our road who specialise in soggy fish and overcooked chips.

Yep, I'm a dinosaur too, so remember those.
Just remembered, last year when we were killing time before catching the overnight ferry to France from Portsmouth, I'd done my research before leaving home, for places to park up for a few hours and places to eat, we fancied F and C 'out of the paper and on the sea front' rather than a sit down meal, but I was disappointed to find nearly all the F and C shops were part of a local chain, and the reviews were pretty universal in damning them as very expensive and pretty poor quality. They were all in high profile busy roads where parking was an issue too, but I persevered with the search and found a independent one a little bit off the beaten track down a back road in Southsea, so that was our target.
What a find, huge pieces of fish, huge portions of chips, all freshly cooked in front of us and absolute delicious, AND cheap too. We struggled to finish them such was the volume, but felt pretty pleased that they were little over half the price of the dreadful chain chippies we'd deliberately avoided. That's a place now marked on the map for future reference and 'dinner' next time I'm that way. If you're that way, worth seeking them out: The Chippy, 84 Clarendon Rd, Southsea, PO5 2PB.
Back in 2009/10 when I was camping at Birchwood Tourist Park, I went into Wareham which was the nearest town to get fish and chips.
To my astonishment, I paid about 8 GBP for a small piece of cod and chips!
I have never gone back, and prefer to eat at a pub with good food further down the road instead.
