Have signed up to this, but they are asking for photos, why??? I don't like adding them, as I look awful. Plus I don't know how to! Part of the reason why I don't put any on here, too many steps, even writing them down doesn't help. I need 2 clicks, not 10.
If they need a photo of you (not sure why) make sure there’s nothing identifiable behind you: house, location, car reg number etc. Take one specifically for this if needs be.
The process should talk you through: I’d expect it to be easier on a phone with some photos in its album.
I once pondered joining for someone to walk the dog now & then. We were rejected as our dog (no longer with us) had some rescue dog issues.
I wouldn't let just anybody take my dog Mrs Bonce, you could be really dodgy or even sell my dog and I never see her again. People need to be checked out and a photo of you could prove who you are when turning up on my doorstep, people wouldn't hand their children over to a total stranger and a dog is no different(not that I am saying you are dodgy) but due to the amount of dogs that have been stolen recently we have to be so careful.
I realise that you need somewhere very soon, but for future use, is there a FB page that would be of use? For example, there is a holiday swap page related to our breed (whippets) and I have found 3 sets of people fairly local to us. We look after their dogs and they have ours. Since all 4 families now know each other we have a good pool of holiday homes.
We met up for walks before any of us left our dogs of course.
------------- Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.
Thanks, we don't have dogs now, so are thinking of borrowing, although OH's nephew's partner has said that she would take on a dog if we couldn't look after it, so we may get one, not seen the right one yet.
Is there a local supermarket with a notice board where you could put an ad?
Or a hospital or nursing home. Or a vet's. There must be people who need temporary emergency dog care or people who become housebound and need more long term dog walkers.
Not being a dog person I wouldn't know how to tap into that community, but I'm sure there will be a place for you.
I know you’re not planning on dog walking as a business, but just do a few checks about insurance cover. It may be that signing up for Walk My Doggie covers you with their pet insurance: for if the dog runs away & gets lost, or the vets bills if it gets hurt running across the road, or gets in a fight because it’s on a lead & the Rottweiler isn’t (or Yorkie, whatever). Or 3rd party insurance because the borrowed dog makes a cyclist fall off - that’s happened to us, thankfully he wasn’t badly cut & didn’t claim, but it’s one reason we are members of Dogs Trust for the third party insurance. A disclaimer might be all that’s needed, but I’d probably keep the dog safely at my home & in the garden to minimise risks, but the fun is in the going for walks.
