Things sounded sort of 'different' the other day, one ear popped leaving a mono sound. After a week of waiting for it to sort itself out, I finally went to the surgery.
Totally blocked with wax was the diagnosis, advising me to soften it with olive oil, baking soda or an over the counter solution, he added that afterwards, I should get syringed, although the NHS have not covered the procedure for four years. I was given a card for a private ear clinic.
I'm still in the ear drop stage but discovering the £80 charge for a consultation is shocking to say the least.
Since my retirement, the health services I required have either been privatised or are not easily available, that's Chiropodists services, Optometry, Hearing and Dentistry.
I'll use the pressure washer.

My local surgery syringes my ears about every 6-8 months, my next appointment is August 18. There never has been any mention of the NHS not providing this service.

It must be that you are all so rich in Suffolk that they need not bother with the service

My GP practice syringes ears, but I have tinnitus & it’s not advised; also, the water pressure burst my mum’s ear drums, albeit many years ago.
I go to a Hearing Clinic that does microsuction with a very narrow tube - you can watch it happening on the screen & the sound of the wax ‘uncorking’ is a relief. Included in the price is a proper hearing test (ie wearing earphones inside a soundproof booth). Haven’t been for several years, cost £50 but presumably more now.

I have mine micro suctioned every year. Very simple and effective. Specsavers do it but I now use a local charity who charge £50. Used to use the NHS ENT dept. until it stopped when Covid hit and the nurses got repurposed on the front line.

Used to have them syringed but got to a stage where the nurses kept refusing to do it. I think it was to do with their insurances which they had to pay themselves so they would not take the slightest risk.

My wife had hers done at our local surgery last year under the NHS. She was advised to go after going to Boots for a hearing test, when she was told she had too much wax to do the test. It must vary according to where you are.

The drawback about having ears syringed is that you can then hear that whining noise!

Correction!!

Just has a note that my Aug 18 appointment is cancelled as

"unfortunately this practice no longer provides this service, nor can it provide the names of any private sector practitioners"

I must admit that an advantage to one ear loss or hearing is that by laying on the good ear, I can't hear her snoring.

Hifi is one of my hobbies and I always recommend to anyone that the cheapest upgrades you can do is to your hifi are stop listening to pink floyd, and buy some ear wax remover. Really makes a huge difference to the top end notes.

I get ear infections whenever I get a cold. My go prescribes betnesol-N which opens up the ear canal. Lots of crud comes out including wax.
