After the Lion & The Cobra and I Do Not Want What I Have Not Got my interest in her material waned, as indicated by subsequent declining sales of the following 8 albums - but they are still good records.
To me, listening back, that second album is both brilliant but also indulgent - as pop should be - the world span around her - and it created a commercial expectation not totally representative of her overall repertoire. It has aged well.
Suspect by far the vast majority have heard very little past the Prince cover, which is a shame as the later albums are worth a listen if only out of curiosity.
Shame shes died. But, while shes obviously made loads and loads of records, i could not name a single one other than NC2Y. Which begs the question, was she a 'one hit wonder' in chart terms? Would she have still made the news dying without this track to her name??
Quick look on spotify plays of NC2U over 300 million, next song on the list 23 million. Its a good song but its disappointing to see so little else has even been given a chance.
For comparison Queen's good-but-incredibly-tiresome BoRap 2.2 Billion, their second track DSMeNow 1.7billion - all of the top 5 over a billion (try to guess the other 3).
She had enough album sales I think to justify her as more than just a one hit wonder, but once you get past the IDNWWIHNG album and NC2U theres a HUGE drop off. Maybe a one album wonder as well??
""""How many records has Sinead O Connor sold?
Sinead sold over 6.2 million albums, including 3.1 million in the United States and 960,000 in the United Kingdom. Her best-selling album was "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got," which sold over 4.96 million copies"""""
Which shows that 1.24 million sales is the total of all her other albums, with the Lion and the Cobra at 500,000 thats less than 750,000 sales for 8 albums ie less than 100,000 each. It's not a brilliant performance by any means.
To me, She trod the line between screw up and tortured artist. Amy Winehouse was the same - although AW had addiction issues. Its interesting how fame can make you a "troubled genius" but lack of fame makes society see these people as a waste of space in a shop doorway not even worthy of a free meal.
