They been quick for a long while now. We have personalised plates and when buying a new car changing them has never been easier. All done online and the paperwork must be auto generated as it is usually back in 48 hours. The only downside with them is returning any remaining car tax by a cheque even though it was paid by card, why can’t they just refund it back on the card?

I suspect that by paying by cheque they allow themselves around 10 days for the money to accrue interest. I agree that it does seem very old school!

Perhaps they are in a similar situation as the passport office in that they have caught up with the backlogs.

They won't retain the card details, so they'd have to set up a refund portal, requiring 2FA at least.
