My son wants a Tablet with a minimum 10" screen for mainly watching films on.
He would prefer a Samsung tablet or similar so he can link all his tech together.
Any advice would be great and the purchase would be from either Currys, Samsung or John Lewis.

For what its worth, i got a Samsung tablet from Currys maybe 18 months ago, and its been poor from day one. I had my daughters techy partner look over it, and he basically said unless you pay silly money, the regular ones have low grade insides that are slow to operate and load. Mine has always taken over a minute to fire up, and thats an age in PC terms. Luckily i only use it for emails and surfing whist away.
Got a 10 inch Samsung Tablet from JL. Its been fine. Even used it as a sat nav in my motorhome! Not sure about films as I tend to watch those on the TV.
Recently bought a Asus Zenbook 14 flip with OLED screen (it's a touch screen tablet/laptop), superb screen/image and not at all bad sound from onboard speakers, but otherwise it's a total pile of POO!!!! Retailing at up to £1k this is an expensive high end device!
Out of the box it crashed - frequently!!! After both Win 11 update and Asus firmware update, it still crashes and has now just crashed again and 'reset' itself pretty much to factory state, lost nearly all added programs and personal data! Customer reviews ALL say inbuilt WiFi/Bluetooth card is CRAP, struggles to connect and keeps dropping connection, I can confirm same experience - had to use a USB dongle to get decent connection!
The professional/press reviews all sing it's praises for spec and performance, the slightly longer term users find it to be pretty CRAP as a host of problems with it's reliability/performance, mine is going back to vendor (Costco) for a refund as not fit for purpose! Avoid at all costs!
There’s a reason Apple stuff is expensive - Steve Jobs once said that comparing like with like, his stuff was about the same price. He just didn’t want to make crap computers.
This isn’t me being smug (well only a little bit), it’s serious advice to invest in tech that a) works and b) lasts. There’s a short period where one needs to relearn keystrokes etc, but I’ve been really impressed with the design and the philosophy; although I’m still deeply suspicious of large corporate entities.
I agree that with technology, you get what you pay for. In 2017 I bought my husband a top of the range iPad Pro. It was expensive and my brother in law scoffed at him for spending so much. My brother in law bought a much cheaper tablet (I can’t remember which brand) and claimed it was just as good! Today, my husbands 2017 iPad Pro is still going strong and my brother in law is on his 4th cheap tablet. Overall he has spent more than my husband for a series of inferior tablets that are just not up to the same standard.
Whatever make you buy, whether Samsung or Apple or whatever, the more expensive models will be far superior and last far longer.
The OP’s son is planning to cook while watching a film on the tablet. I think I’d just put the laptop onto the kitchen counter top - I can’t see enough detail on our tablet without getting up close to it.
Many years ago, when I used to produce videos, I bought a specially built PC for the editing. It spent more time in the shop for repair than in my edit room. Plus the fact, all the different programs needed for the editing, as they were by different companies, would not communicate with each other.
Finally decided to buy an iMac and never looked back. Everything worked as it should. I have stayed with Apple ever since and have a macbook and two ipads. By far the best investments I have made in the computing world.
As has already been stated, they may be more expensive, but there is a reason for that.
