2 trips booked!

Easter weekend and a trip up north before attending a conference in Newcastle.

The latter involves finding a boarding kennel for the dog while I attend the conference; hence I thought I should start planning as soon as the dates for the conference was confirmed about 2 weeks ago to avoid disappointment.

The big trip next year will be France and Germany; don't know when exactly, most likely to be in May, June or July.

Yes, I know I am nuts in booking that far ahead!

It's good to have something to look forward to, especially a trip away.

We are going camping in the Netherlands this year and I have flirted with the idea of going further afield next year, as the kids are getting older and next year might be the last time the eldest comes with us.

I did consider the south of France but that would be one hell of a road trip. It would need to be no longer than 2 weeks, with a stop-over on the way there and back, not to mention the UK drive also.

2026?? I haven't even started booking 2025 yet! Not quite true, I do have a week in Corfu coming up soon, but that's only booked because a flight is involved.

Possibly beat you DK, the only trip so far booked for this year, beginning of Aug, is my rescue dog rally week, and that was provisionally booked before we even left the site at last year's rally, also the same week in Aug! - yes, it's back to the same site, and booked a year and a week ahead!

.... and a good chance we'll book 2026 before we leave 2025 event!

Everything else is TBA at the moment, but they will happen. .... don't know where, don't know when, but I will at 'some' point!

Rainmagnet, the south of France is extremely possible for a 2 week trip, we used to do it when I was working. We put a tent up every night too.

You still beat me by booking in August last year, as I had also provisionally booked the site in Dorset where I would normally stay in September last September when I was there.

I wanted a specific pitch with good Wi-Fi, hence I needed to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Nope. I don’t tempt fate (or the weather gods) by booking so far ahead. Only just booked a wee cruise in June from a Scottish port, and a week later I’ve had a health issue which could scuttle it (hopefully not).

I'm another one who doesn't book too far ahead. A week or two for UK trips is more than enough.   I have however booked for a June trip to Germany for Johannesfest in Mainz.

We are off for a 2 month adventure ,. early June 2025 .
Really fancy the Johannesfest in Mainz.

We will be staying about 40 miles away just after the festival.

Would appreciate any tips, recommendations for sites.

For this trip, we're flying to Germany and renting an apartment convenient for the festivities. Many years ago, we lived in Mainz - for work, and we've been back many times.
There is a campsite on an island in the Rhine joined to Mainz by a bridge.
We normally travel up the Mosel to Saarland and stay in one of the three sites in Saarburg.

In addition to Mainz, we plan to visit Koblenz where you can take a cable car across the river to a magnificent fort with great views. Also hope to visit Rudesheim and take a trip round the vineyards.

Booked 4 weeks from next Sunday, Stafford, Billsborrow near Preston, near Gosforth, Cumbria, Allonby, Bowes near Barnard Castle, Upper Denby near Halifax and Earl Shilton near Leicester.

To Cornwall after that, several stops each way for 4 weeks again.

To Lowestoft sometime to see SIL.

we managed to get a site not too far from Mainz for the festivities.
I like the sound of Koblenz.
we are staying in Rudsesheim for 12 days,so should gad about a bit.

Rudesheim, if you don't know it, is a 'quaint' village with a cable car that takes you up to where you can get a great view of the area.

I would recommend that you get a Rhineland pass for the railway - for up to 5 people - and this gives you unlimited day travel in the Rhineland and Saarland areas for a very good price. Not ICE trains.

I am now more convinced than ever that my policy of not booking more than 2 weeks ahead is the right one for me. For the past 5 weeks I have had a problem (as yet not definitely diagnosed) with my back and right leg. I can barely stand for more than a couple of minutes so it looks like we won't be going anywhere anytime soon. It is now looking like we are going to have to cancel/postpone our Corfu holiday which we booked at the end of last year as it is only now a few weeks away. As we get older I suppose these problems get more likely to occur.

Best Regards,
Colin
