We had an email from the insurance company that we have been with for a number of years because our renewal date is upcoming, to inform us that they would no longer cover our car due to company policy changes ie, no longer accepting under 21 year olds and anyone who is over 80yrs old, plus other vehicles inc Land Rovers and others etc. This is a well known large organization so came as a shock, I contacted them to get the information
We have managed to get cover from another company expensive but we’re covered

My car insurance is coming up soon too, and I always shop around every year. I use 3 different comparison sites and check 3 insurers who aren't on comparison sites. I have been with my current insurer for 2 years now but whether or not they get my business for a 3rd year will depend on what they quote me compared to what I can get elsewhere. It is getting more restrictive though as I get older, as some insurers are not now offering insurance to drivers over 75, which I am.
Car insurance is one of the biggest rip-offs going, in my opinion. They seem to just make up figures as they go, probably trying to see what they can get away with. One company will see a particular make and model as "high risk" while another will see the same vehicle completely differently. A few years ago I had been with a company for a few years because they offered me the best deal on my Volvo estate, but when I switched to an X Trail the premium went through the roof! I switched to another company who had previously quoted me really expensive for the Volvo, but quite a bit less for the X Trail. I have had a similar situation before too. There is no consistancy.
Just wonder how much longer us 80+ drivers will be allowed to keep our driving licences anyway. There seems to be quite a campaign to get us off the road. I agree there are some who are not fit to drive, but that goes for all age groups. Personally, I think the real reason for most accidents is because many drive too fast, in such a hurry to get somewhere.
I have often thought, car manufacturers could save money by not fitting an accelerator pedal just an on/ off switch to the engine, ie full power or nothing. Many seem to drive in that way.
We are going down to one car, as hubby is retiring and giving up his company car. My renewal quote with him as named driver was over £100 more than last year, with 16 years no claims, and no speeding tickets in the last decade. So hubby puts exactly the same info into the same places, and gets quotes well over £100 less. So now it's all in his name.
There is simply no logical explanation for it, all AI I think.
There is absolutely no logic with insurance companies. Two years ago I switched from 1st Central insurance, who I'd been with for two years. They had put their renewal up quite considerably, so I switched to NFU who were a bit cheaper. I was with them for two years but when I got their renewal quote this year it was nearly £100 dearer than last year. As usual I went straight onto my three comparison sites to get some quotes. The company I went with wasn't the cheapest but it seemed like a good deal as it was less than I paid NFU last year. The company I switched to? 1st Central! How does that work?
It seems to me that two years with any one company is the optimum. First renewal is reasonable, but the second one goes through the roof.
