We have/had a decorator, came recommended, great reviews. The work he has done so far is useless. Paid a deposit. Saturday evening I received an email from his wife to state that he has torn his Achilles playing football and that they would phone to discuss. Nothing yet. I know about the letters etc re. potential legal process and about return of deposit.
So 2 things- I suppose we should pay him for his time.
Is there any way to find out whether this "injury" is genuine? We know where he lives but nowhere to park near his house.
Obvious way is to get someone else to call him for a quote. If he isn't available he will probably say he is fully booked for 3-6 months if he has genuinely torn his achilles.
A rugby player friend had a partial tear in September, he will be fit to play in March. Had it been a full tear he was looking at 12-18 months to be match ready.
Hmm. Poor workmanship so far? Then I’d wonder if the reviews are made up. That happens.
Are the recommendations from people you personally know & trust? If not, I’d doubt they are genuine: that happens too. If you know the people, ask them if anything similar happened while he was on their jobs. Maybe he’s prone to bad handovers, aka Achilles heel injuries.
You could tell him (via his wife) that his work is not up to standard, so you want him off the job before you have to pay someone else to make good his substandard work. Make sure you have photos of the poor workmanship.
Has the deposit paid for his time so far? you certainly don’t want to put good money after bad.
Legal advice available via Consumers Assn (aka Which?).
Thanks Fiona, no personal recommendations. We had our conservatory roof changed and hired him to paint it on the recommendation of the plasterer who knew him but not his work. Not heard from him again and not surprised. I know what to do legally. Will have to pay him something, need to work out how much. We have someone else to do the work, an acquaintance of OH.
