I kind of think traveling is a conscious choice to slow down my life.
No work chasing after me, no bills to stress about. I can finally step back into my own rhythm.
There's no rush when I wake up, and both sunrise and sunset become something worth actually stopping to watch.
So what is it that made you fall in love with camping?
Is there a specific moment or memory that got you completely hooked?
Just curious to know. Feel free to share your thoughts. :)
Aged 11 I went on a Scout night hike, we were slept in an old hut on the local Scout campsite. It had a smell of ancient dried mud turned to dust and to me adventure, I was hooked!
My parents took me on a camping trip in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus when I was 3, in the 1950s. What’s not to like about really cooking outdoors, on a real campfire?
The trowel for digging a hole for going to the loo… that might have had a lifelong negative effect, however. Probably accounts for the MH toilet fairy’s strict rule: pee only.
Going camping with the scouts as a boy probably sowed the seed.
When I grew up and got married, being in a low-paid job meant that cost was a major factor. Camping was cheaper than going abroad and as I enjoyed it anyway that was the clincher. When the family came along one of the major attractions was that in those days most sites simply charged for a pitch and nothing else, so going on holiday with 5 of us and our 2 dogs cost no more than we would have paid just as a couple. All that has changed now of course as sites have realised that there is money to be made in charging per person and other extras. If that had been the case back in the 1970s we would probably never have camped as a family at all.
When we first got our dog, we wanted to be able to share our holidays with her, so we bought a trailer tent. All three of us fell in love with camping. So much so, on the first morning of each holiday, our dog would wake us wanting to get the day started at the first sign of daylight.
Even though we lost her some 30 years ago, when we arrive at a site we still think how much she would have enjoyed herself there.
Boys Brigade. Annual summer camp and also weekend camps when we went hillwalking or the west lowland hike. It stuck with me. I got my own 2 man tent when I was 15 and then when our kids were small it was the cheapest way to go on holiday.
