Hi all,

We need to hcange our car early next yeat and just looking for osmething to two our van with at 1410 Kgs loaded.

Does anyone yet tow with a Hybrid (not plugin), which would cope with this weight. I am aware now there are plenty out there being able to tow the van but not heard any rumours or reviews yet. All reviews tend to be solo drives.

Primarily looking at Mazda CX5, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan X-trail models. (New)

any review or advice welcome.

I know of two fellow caravanners who both have a Kia Sportage Hybrid which both have had to downsize their caravans due to the towing capability of the car. If that's anything to go by, it portrays a general picture that you can tow with a Hybrid but there may be some restrictions involved related to the caravan weight ratio. Other than that I can't really comment from a personal point of view.

We purchased a Tucson hybrid last October, to replace a Santa Fe diesel.( We were unable to get a new Santa Fe diesel).
It tows our Bailey Cadiz very well.obviously it's a bit lighter than a Santa Fe but legal to tow.
Ours is around 90% ratio based on kerbweight of car and MPTLM of the van.
We don’t put lots in the van as only 2 of us. Heavy awning etc all go in the car.
It's very stable and has plenty of power. First tow after collecting from store was from Shropshire to Clitheroe in Lancashire and back so a good selection of roads.
Economy similar to the diesel towing but much better solo. It will improve as more miles are put on.

We considered a Santa Fe hybrid which has the same 230 hp power unit, but the Tucson being a bit lighter has better power to weight. Also it's list price means it's not liable for extra VED.( Santa Fe models all over £40k).
Ours is the Ultimate self charging one. Very well equipped and comfortable.
It really goes well too especially in sport mode!
Hyundai advise you do 1200 miles before towing, which we did.
Tucson self charging hybrid can tow 1650kg, plug in 1350 kg.

Have a look at the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

The AWD version can tow 1,650 Kgs, but the nose weight is only 70 Kgs.

Gets very good comments from owners, who tow with it.

Top of my list for next year.

Hi thanks for some quick reviews, we are thinking of the Hyundai Tucson self charge model.

at 664DaveS - How does it fair in solo driving, we had a test drive on Sunday, and whilst being new to this EV / Hybrid era, though it drove quite well. Do you see a reduction in Fuel (petrol) use / cost around town?

at tango55 - Surely that comment is down to OP's not doing due diligence and obtaining correct car to tow van?? or was it matched okay and just not man enough to tow, as also considering the Kia Sortage Hybrid.

Might still end up with 2.0 ltr diesel Tiguan though!!!!

We see around 45 sometimes more mpg solo as it runs on electric part of the time.especially in town.

I too am ready to change my car. I have had a twin axle caravan for years and towed with a ford galaxy, only issue was on wet grass the front wheel drive could be an issue with spinning wheels. I then towed with a volvo xc60 w wheel drive. absolute dream to be fair without any issues. The car has now done 162000 miles and is at the stage were I do not want to spend anymore. My new caravan is still a twin axle 1650kgs. Considering Sportage hybrid due to no diesels in the UK for the latest model. Same with the Tuscan, the cars are very similar spec with same parent company. Want something for everyday commuting but unsure of the economy and pulling power of both cars due to the 1.6L engine. I've never had less than 2.0L engine.
Thanks in advance

I’ve tow my 1450kg Eldiss infinity 574 with a little Ford Kuga self charging hybrid, it has a2.5 petrol engine. I towed from Santander to Nerja in January, I averaged 42mpg, solo I average 48mpg.

Nissan X Trail would have to be 4x4 to be able to tow a caravan as 2wd is only rated to tow a much lower weight . Mines only 2wd but they are a smooth drive no gears as elec motors drive wheels and do about 43mpg on a long trip , 4x4 not much lower .

Our 23 Hyundai Tucson has just been to France for a month towing our Bailey Phoenix . It tows very well,,better now it has done 12000 miles. Mpg towing 24 to 26.
Solo pootling around actually saw 77 mpg one day!
That was on French country roads where speed limit 80 kph plus less in towns and villages.
That is according to onboard brain which I have no reason to argue with!
Solo it has surprised the odd chav mobile on acceleration. Sport mode is very rapid but not often used.
