Hi, relating to my earlier post. Looking for recs for a new towcar. These are the details of our wee caravan if it helps anyone with recommendations. Looking for something smaller than our 2l Seat Leon but with big enough boot for dog. So small estate or crossover type car. I get confused with the different figures.
Caravan Specifications for a Lunar Stellar 400 2001
Mass in Running Order weight: 860 kgs or 16.9284673832 cwt / hundred weight
Maximum allowable weight is: 1100 kgs or 21.6526908389 cwt / hundred weight
The kerbweight of the towing car needs to be at least 1294.11764706kgs to achive an 85% match, to achive a 95% match the tow car would need to be at least 1157.89473684 kgs.
The Skoda Octavia estate has quite a big rear luggage area by volume in comparison to many rivals which is actually bigger than a Ford Mondeo estate. As you need a large luggage area for the dog, the Octavia maybe worth considering for practicality reasons which there is also the Octavia 'Scout' model which is a 4x4 estate which makes it ideal choice of a towcar without being too big.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Practical caravan magazine tested the new Seat Leon with a 1-litre petrol engine fairly recently. They liked it and it has a towing limit of 1300kg.
The VW Golf and Skoda Octavia are both mechanically identical to the Seat and to be honest are about the best small estates you'll find.
You could also look at the VW T-Cross and Skoda Kamiq small SUVs (again, they're the same thing underneath and based on the VW Polo) but not sure if the boot space will be enough for you.
Thanks for replies. My husband likes the Skodas so will look further at them. I fancy the crossovers as I like being a bit higher in the driving seat so will look at the Scout, husband has hankered over the Octavia for a while and prefers estates! Reviews for the Karoq as a towcar are mixed. We had looked at the Golf's but I wasnt so keen - I quite like the look of 1.5 VW Tiguan. They all cost a fortune so need to research well as well be keeping it for a while. As an aside talking about prices, I bought a wee 2012 micra for work about 5 years ago. Looked recently for another work car and the same model/year was not much cheaper than I paid all that time ago. Crazy!

My current car, a 2008 Nissan X trail, I bought nearly 4 years ago, and looking on ebay I would struggle to get one today for the same price. Plenty of them still around of the same model, and even the previous model, but there aren't many for sale. Even those that are for sale are very expensive for a car of that age.
Have you considered buying a car from Cazoo at all?
You choose a car from a filtered list on the internet, put down the required deposit and have it for 7 days then you can decide if you like it or not. If you return the vehicle for any particular reason you get a full refund. This would enable you to try different vehicles with the one deposit till you find the vehicle that suits your needs.
I have recently purchase a vehicle from Cazoo myself about 6 weeks ago and can honestly say from experience that they were really helpful. They offered me a part exchange price for my old vehicle which I accepted which provided about 70% of the deposit required.

I quite like the x trail - do you tow with it?
I certainly do! My caravan is only a light-weight one and I hardly know it's on the back. Tows like a dream, very stable, and hardly uses any more diesel than it does running solo. Mine is an automatic, which I much prefer, and it has a 1350kg towing limit which is plenty for me, but the manual version has a towing limit of 2,000kg. Exactly the same engine, which is why mine hardly notices my 1,000kg caravan.
