Which is the best route? the longest with the best roads, the shortest, or something in between?

Depends how quickly need to get between the two.

If you have 2-3 days the north Aberdeenshire coast is well worth visiting. Cullen, Portsoy, Gardenstown, Pennan (neither of those two are towing frindly, but lovely places to visit), Banff, Fraserburgh,

If you need to do it in a day Nairn, Huntly, Aberdeen.

The A95 goes from Boat of Garten to Keith (nowhere near Nairn)

For a scenic route, A96 to Fochabers, then A98 coastal route to Fraserburgh, then A90 to Aberdeen.

Sorry it's A96 all the way or the coastal route that macquatic suggested.

For speed & ease of towing, A96 door to door. Sure, you cut off the corner but it’s an area that needs time to appreciate. Treat it as a recce because that NE coast is worth exploring another time, without a caravan attached (I mean, leaving the caravan on a site).

We live on the west coast, but we enjoy visiting Aberdeenshire because it has so many National Trust for Scotland castles & gardens. Aberdeen itself is a city with much to see too.
