Guys can someone please advise I bought a new car on saturday which will be our towcar come june, the car comes with stndard AA cover for free, I was going to buy the carvan club cover for £105 per year for peace of mind as we wont be covered by my cc policy.
I can upgrade to
Roadside assistance for an extra £1 per month £12
or
Roadside assistance and national recovery £6 per month £72
Is it worth going for these are just going straight for the caravan club cover, as a rule we dont really travel that far away but we are going to Cornwall this summer
I am a bit confused, maybe it's just me. If you have AA cover for free, why do you need anything else?
I have breakdown/recovery cover with Start Rescue. It covers everything I am likely to need, and my renewal this year was under £40. I have been with them now for several years and called them out once for recovery when my alternator failed on my Volvo. They got to me as quick as anyone would have done in the circumstances (evening rush hour in North London) and recovered my car to my home as I requested. I have looked at both AA & RAC but they don't appear to offer anything more than I already have, but they cost several times what I am paying.

Somehow I doubt whether it would cover you with the caravan, but I couldn't be certain without reading all the terms and conditions. I know the policy I have covers me with or without the van.

Colin - you may need to check what is covered ...Some of the companies will cover your tow vehicle for all eventualities but should there be a breakdown with your towed trailer or caravan they will not cover it..Example being a wheel hub failure on a caravan - where the caravan requires recovery to a place of repair etc....
So I changed from AA to Caravan Club Mayday recovery provided by Greenflag ...which is approx £100 a year and covers myself and my wife to drive ANY vehicle ( including motorcycles ) with a trailer or caravan also covered for breakdowns
I must admit I'm not sure about cover for a fault on the caravan, I'll have to look into that one. I do know however that if the car develops a fault while attached to the caravan, both will be recovered. Probably though, if the caravan is well maintained, the most likely failure would be a tyre. When I had a tyre blow-out on my caravan decades ago I had no spare. It was in the middle of Milton Keynes, so I pulled into a layby, detached the car and went off to get a new tyre. I was lucky it happened there I know but at the time I had no breakdown cover at all.
I think that a car is much more likely to develop a fault than a caravan though. If I'm not covered for a fault on the caravan, I'll have to make a decision as to whether to pay a greatly increased premium, or take a calculated risk.
If the car breaksdown they will tow the caravan. But they do not offer anywhere near the cover of the Arrival or Mayday packages.
The caravan packages will recover the caravan if there if it cannot be towed and offer return travel and even put the caravan into storage if you dont store it at home etc.
As has been said, the Mayday cover is the most comprehensive cover you can get, including a caravan. Also, you will find that the longest, but still legal, caravans are not included in the AA's cover, reason I switched to Mayday a few years ago.
But like any insurance, you can only judge them when you need them, and the 3 times I've had to, all when at home, they've always attended within the hour. Once was to the caravan when I couldn't get the spare wheel carrier released! Unlike the AA who left me stranded, the car on it's own, for hours a few hundred yards from services on the M74, so hardly a remote area!!!
Yes that is the thing, you can only judge them when you need them. I have only called out my breakdown company once in quite a few years, in the middle of evening rush hour in north London, and they got to me as quickly as anyone could have done. They then swiftly transported my car home as I asked them to. Couldn't fault that.
I have been a green flag / mayday member since leaving the AA a few years back after discovering they didn't provide cover for the towed trailer/caravan ( should that Develope a mechanical fault ) Had one grumble in that they sent a local garage out to my car while on a cl as a piece of flint had jammed in the front brake calliper....They were insistent on taking it 20 miles to their garage to repair.....They advised that they wouldn't jack the car up on grass even though their large recovery truck had a few large battens/planKS on board for such eventualities..So after pointing this out he grudglingly started the on site repair....I think he was trying to get some extra cash out of either me or Green flag. The next issue was last September at Manchester airport car park...We returned after 2 week away to fond the car battery flat...I rang Green Flag and was put into an automated ''call back service'' in the meantime the car park came out with a jump rack and got me going.....3 hrs later having been hime , had tea etc , green flag rang me back asking for my location!!!!! ...negative / appropriate feedback given !
I've just got back from 2 weeks in peak district. Car OK caravan OK until return journey. Car over heated after 10 miles. I called Mayday (greenflag) the technician was with us in 30 mins. He spend 30 mins looking for the fault which is radiator fan caput. He put car on truck on his truck, caravan on his tow hitch and took us home, 210 miles. No hassle. Just great service. I will use Mayday all the time. They do double recovery, ie if car or caravan breaks down on way to a rebooked site they will take you there. Then take your car to a local garage. If it can't be repaired by the end of your holiday they will take your car and caravan back to your home anywhere in the UK. Brilliant cover. Check Mayday rescue out through the Caravan Club. You will be surprised.
