Hi there. My alternator just died in my volvo s40 everything went including the power steering which I thought was pump fed with fluid. But found out it's electric 😳 I am trying to source a replacement but it's a minefield out there. Can anyone help me with the ampage in need for replacement as I have seen them go from 70amps to 150amps. I don't know what's in car at present thanks.
I suspect a dealer would be the best people to advise on something like that.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
When mine went on the S40 I had, I got it refurbished by an auto electrician. The Volvo part was very expensive. You could replace with a cheaper Ford part on some years.
Nothing like as simple as matching JUST the output amperage - it needs to have same mounting points, and same pulley as original, and possible variations in electric connector too!
As suggested, Eurocarparts, GSF, Halfords or the like, enter your registration number to find compatible part. A local auto electrician may be able to fix your old one, and possibly cheaper than a replacement, but otherwise expect new for old exchange (or deposit for exchange over and above purchase price), AND check replacement comes complete with pulley, you may have to swap old pulley onto new alternator!
