Hi all,
Will my grandfather rights automatically carry over when I have to renew my license at 70, I understand I have to renew every 3 years but wondering if I have to inform DVLA that I want to carry on towing, at this time my outfit is under 3.5t but I might be changing the caravan in future and don’t want to be limited if I see a heavier van.
Thanks in advance
Graham

When I renewed my licence at 70 my new licence still showed my entitlement to tow, but I know others where it had been removed.

If you only intend to tow caravan or drive motorhome no heavier than 3500 you don't need to have a medical to retain Group C on license. All you need to do is renew and you will have Group B+E covering your towing needs. I have done this for over 10 years now which will cover car plus caravan weight up to 8250 kg. having passed before 1Jan 1997

Thanks for the replies Bernie & Birdman I’m not 70 until April 2025 so ok for now but just checking in case I have to fill any extra forms in, glad to know I will keep my group B+E after I renew next year that way if I do change the caravan I’m not worried about weights ( I’m same as you Birdman passed my test well before 1/1/97 and started towing in1976) funny how we never bothered about weights back then started with a Rover 2000 P6 pulling a 1972 Thompson Glenelg
Thanks again Graham

Hehe full circle indeed you started with alpine and finished up with an alpine hope I don’t have to end my towing journey with the Glenelg ( can you still get gas mantles) don’t fancy a fortnight of pumping cold water with the foot pump and clearing condensation from inside the glass winded 😂😂

When you renew use the government website https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70 You can renew up to 90 days early and it is free If you need to renew with a photo I would recommend using the post office service.

Yes that is very important. Make sure you use the .gov website for your renewal. There is the usual gang out there who will offer to do your renewal (probably on a similar looking website) but they will charge you a fee for what is really a free service. So easy to do that even I managed it. Your new licence usually arrives in just a few days.

Don't forget you have to renew every 3 years from 70 on. I kept my photo from when I was 70 in 2019 and used one of the other copies for the 73 years old renewal.

Still got the motorbike licence. Hmmmm...

Same age as me then Navver. I've still got my BE licence but not my DE, as I didn't renew that in 2021. That one is annual.

You keep B+E which covers outfit to 8250 kg.If you want to retain C1 which is vehicles up to 7500kg and some minibuses you need the medical forms.
I didn't bother as if we do go to a motorhome it wouldn't be over 3500kg.
I used my passport for the photo as its on file.Just put the details on the form.
My renewal,is due this November as I will be 73 . I have a new passport so will use that for the photo.

The photo doesn't need to be renewed every 3 years, my photo isn't due for renewal until 2029, oh and yes I am over 70.
