So after 5 years with a mondeo 2.2 thats now 14 years old its time to look for something a little newer.kind of decided on an suv for the higher position and ease of getting the mrs in and out ( back issues )
Seen on autotrader a 2017 kuga st line,2.0 tdci 150 bhp 2 wd and a 65 sportage 2.0 gt line Awd ,both id like to view and drive.mileage same, kuga £1000 more and has no towbar whereas the kia has one.
Anyone tow with either of these and how do you get on ?
The kias spec is great with reverse camera and AWD etc but at 134 bhp is it a bit underpowered ?
Really need to drive both but got a hard act to follow the mondeo.

Not had a Sportage, but Sorento & Santa Fe plus other Kia & Hyundai cars as runabouts not for towing whilst nice motors to drive are not the most efficient on fuel. For your next tow car I would be inclined to go for the Kuga which has a bit more power. Having towed caravans for 50 years now you can never have to much power.

Son in law had 13 pin towbar fitted on his 1.5 Kuga ST line 2019 model back in summer for 650 a Towtrust fixed swan neck. So should be about the same as 2017 as same bodyshell.

Weve had 3 mondeos 04 plate 11 plate 65 plate
We now have a kuga which is a far better tow car, same spec as the one your looking at. Tows our 1560 kg van without any issues.

Another good car with high position is the s max, not many around now, built on the Mondeo chassis but one hell of a car, I had a 07 plate in between the mondeos & if I could of got another I wouldnt of hesitated to get one, really comfy on a long ride

We had a Ford Kuga 2.0 180 AWD new in 2015, and towed as far as the Pyrennes. We have had three other, different make, tow cars since then, and I can say that the Kuga was the best tow car I have ever had. I towed for a living.

I tow with the 182 bhp version of the 2.0 diesel Sportage, towing a 1,500kg caravan.
Even on quite steep hills it is pretty effortless.
It is however fairly poor on mpg.
On a long tow down to the toe of Cornwall, I usually get 26-27 mpg

That mpg while towing seems about right to me. We tow with a 2.2 Sorento and mostly get between 26 and 30 mpg depending on roads and weather conditions. Occasionally we get up to 33mpg but that is unusual.

I would be pretty happy if I got 33mpg whilst NOT towing. the 182bhp 2.0 Sportage is a nice car, but it's thirsty.

My 2008 Nissan X Trail 2 litre diesel automatic does about 35mpg on average and it doesn't seem to make much difference with the caravan on the back. Not noticeable. It is only a caravan weighing slightly under 1 ton though. Great towcar!

So,thanks for the replies..seen and driven both and dismissed both.kuga ,not enough kit..no heated seats for a start.downgrade on mondeo…kia,a tad flat and uninspiring….settled on a volvo xc60 d5,fully loaded with kit and with 215bhp for less than the other 2..
Cheers

I'm sure you will be happy with the Volvo. I had a year 2000 V70 for about 9 years and it was a great car. I would probably have still had it if I didn't have trouble getting out of it due to my back problems. According to the DVLA website it is still on the road at nearly 24 years old.

First volvo we have owned, heard good reports on longevity
Stunning vehicle.every conceivable extra on it and came with a detachable, tow bar and also got the polestar upgrade.the torque is staggering.definitely made the right choice.
