Morning all ,after enduring towing on the a54 Congleton to Buxton many times ,we are going this weekend and my nerves just can't take it anymore 🤣 what's an alternative? Is the A53 better ?we are going to pomeroy
Looks like you can go via Macclesfield which adds on a few miles, but no idea if it's a better road. Try various route planners and see what you think.
Rather begs the question, 'what is it about the A54 that jangles your nerves?'.
It's not a road I know, but looked at it on Google streeview and it seems just like any other road across that sort of terrain, and I've towed on plenty similar without much concern. If we're to offer alternatives (if such exists in terms of driving experience!), then rather need to know what you wish to avoid/minimise!
I've towed to a couple of sites in the region, one just off A523 south of Leek, and one off the A515 at Biggin, don't recall any issues. Only comment would be A515 through Ashbourne is a tad tight and wiggly in a couple of places, and you may need to do a hill start on the steep hill north out of town!
Maybe my nerves are less easily 'jangled' than yours, so I may not be seeing the things that concern you.
You ask about the A54 as an alternative to the A54! - I take that to be a typo, and maybe you meant A53!
Rather looks to me like you are not going to find much better routes, one is up to Macclesfield with 'town roads' then much the same country roads you seek to avoid on A537 across towards Buxton. The other route would be down the A523 past Leek to pick up A53. Neither for any obvious great gain as far as I can see.
Yes I meant the A 53 I have corrected it ,the Congleton to Buxton road is very steep with a few drops ,Iam not great with heights 🙈 hairpin bend ,its a stressful tow with our large set up

the A54 is a normal carriageway that hgvs would use, and apart from one hairpin which has a rise to it that requires careful gear selection, the rest of the road is perfectly fine. are you the actual driver or just the passenger?
The A53 from Leek goes over the top of the Peak District so does have some long uphill stretches, but there shouldn't be anything that's too steep to handle. HGVs and coaches use it.
I'm not familiar with the A54 so can't say how it compares.

We were staying outside of leek a while ago on the Buxton side . It is a bit hilly and bendy . But it’s not very busy we used to see a lot of caravans on that road . Just take it steady as long as your car can cope I’m sure it would be fine , saying that I would probably need to blind fold my husband on that route . Good luck
