Hi All
Whilst towing my caravan, every time l indicate either left or right a high pitch audible warning beep (at the interval of the indicators) is heard within the car, which is the norm. But as I was driving home yesterday it suddenly stopped. I checked all the lights and they are working properly with the car's lights.
My questions are:
What has broken?
Is it an MOT failure?
Many thanks in advance.

If an indicator bulb fails whilst indicating then the sounder will stop working.

Sometimes the radio or wind noise or even the road surface can drown out the beeper noise.

You need an audible or visual sign to show the indicators are working. The beeper is one option which is easy to fit. Some cars have a visual warning if a caravan bulb fails.

When you say you checked the "lights" I assume you mean the indicators !
If they work then presumably it is the buzzer unit that has failed.
I cannot believe they would even check it was working during a MOT. I think that legally you can have either an audible or visual indication that you indicator bulbs are working.

Thanks for your replies. It is definitely that the buzzer has failed, as the lights were tested once I had stopped.
Hopefully it won't be an expensive repair.

It may simply need adjustment. My previous car had one that worked by sensing current through the cars wiring and was mounted under the dash. When it was hot though it was over sensitive and would chirp away when I turned the indicators on without having the caravan with me. Then on a cold day it wouldn't work even when towing.

As far as I'm aware, the audible bleeper is only installed with the older type 7 pin plug and socket (12N) which was the old fashioned way of relaying the message to the driver that the indicators are functioning correctly. The newer type 13 pin connections have a different type of message system whereby a visual display should be evident on the vehicle's instrument display (dashboard) which is much more reliable and less likely to malfunction like the previous audible bleepers as they were prone to electrical problems.
However, as far as the MOT test is concerned, the law changed a few years ago whereby the towbar is now included in the test but not sure whether the lights and audible bleeper are tested with a trailer board to confirm that everything is satisfactory so the best advice is to ask at any MOT test centre regarding this.
