Asking here for FIL....

Their Sorrento (an auto), broke down last night.

They said they 'lost power' - but it would rev to 3000RPM before changing gear, but have no power to then drive it but give out loads of black smoke....

They've have been told today it's 'either' the turbo, or a blocked exhaust (?).

What's your thoughts...?

I was thinking today (until told about the smoke), gearbox...

Revving, but no drive?? Lack of AT fluid???

But they've been quoted £700+ for a turbo if it is that!!!

i would say, black smoke = turbo or injectors.

It goes to a garage for it's servicing DS, but you never know what they do, do you....?

And as for EGR valve, possibly.

I know they do loads of 'short' runs, and you know diesels don't like short runs...

Hello, what year is the said vehicle?

Before spending big bucks on turbo or worse......check out the EGR valve, may be gummed up with carbon deposits and choking the engine.
second, check if fitted with exhaust filter.....is it blocked?

They won't listen to 'other' opinions, even after me asking on here for them....
They will only listen to what the garage will say, then whinge about how much it's just cost them!

I offered to change the brake pads and discs
ages ago but they said no. It went to garage and cost them an arm.....

I tried again to explain last night, but no....

So I'm letting them get on with it this time (again)......

Leak in the pipe between turbo and inlet. Does it smoke worse under power.

Well, they've just got the car back.

And it was the turbo.

I was told 'black smoke'...

It wasn't!! MIL just said 'Oh no, it was grey / white smoke', which does point to turbo failure.

I'm angry now, after posting on here - trying to help. yet they gave me wrong info to post with in the first place...!

You done nothing wrong on here, and if any member has a problem with smoke from a car or lack of power, then this thread should help them.

There are places that recondition turbos, they may do straight exchange if they have stock.
Will be better price than a new one direct from Kia.

I would have thought the mas air flow sensor, when they go you always get black or dark smoke
