I have recently obtained a full sized alloy wheel and tyre to rid myself of the 'Spacesaver' one supplied with the car, however my question is - Do I just ignore the direction of rotation on the two wheels that it could fit on going the wrong direction?
OK, the tread pattern won't displace water quite so well but is there anything else I should know? (obvoiusly it is only a short term fix), the other thing is, it is a winter tyre that is fitted.

DO NOT fit it on the side of your car other than the side on witch it rotates the right way !
It's how they are put together ! on a long run you stand the chance of the tyre shredding & causing a accident !
If it's the look of your car with the space saver on then you need to get your tyre changed faster ! LOL

If you ever had to put the spare wheel on and the tyre unfortunately happens to be the wrong rotation, it is guaranteed that your car insurance will be instantly be void. Tyres that have an arrow rotational display on the side wall are designed and constructed solely for safety reasons and should always be adhered to. The tyre tread on the spacesaver tyre is designed for the purpose of either rotation that is why a maximum speed limit is applied merely because the tyre is designed specifically for temporary measure only.
Thanks for the replies guys, this is strangly worrying. It was only gonna be as a short term fix anyway until I got to a tyre repair shop. I thought that after say, a rear tyre failure whilst towing, it would be a better temporary option than the spacesaver one.
I'm going to look into this a bit further with tyre manufacturers and breakdown organisations.

I can't see a problem. If you have a full sized wheel & tyre for a spare then change the directional winter tyre for any non directional summer tyre & you have the full size spare you wanted.
With a full sized spare then your delay is only short whether you change it yourself or call out breakdown & then you can continue your journey as normal.
Anything else turns a minor inconvenience to a major one because you cannot go much further without finding a tyre depot which will be a problem out of hours/wkend & worse if you need a new tyre because size will probably not be in stock.
Good point well made Opensause, and a lesson learned but not the hard way.
I will but an assymetric tyre for my spare, pity coz the directional one is brand spanking new but it's not good enough for use on half the wheels.
Perhaps I can use it as a sweetener on a deal for the replacement.

The tyre companies say that you can fit a directional spare tyre the wrong way around for a short period, the same as you are only supposed to use the space saver wheel until you can get to the nearest tyre depot.
You should restrict your speed the same.
