[edit] The petrol isn't fwd. oops
[edit 2] For those that might not know, the Petrol gearbox is unusually a traditional torque converter.

I'd really, really like to buy this car. But I probably shouldn't? Should I? Maybe?

My van will be a 2016 Bailey Unicorn Cadiz and this combo turns in at 94%. It's not that, that worries me but
a) the potential fuel consumption
b) The way the engine and auto box would deliver the power.

If I could get 20-22 mpg'ish towing and 30mpg'ish otherwise, I could live with it.

I've found it difficult to find anyone using this car to tow. Anyone here?

If not this car, the how about the following;
FORD MONDEO DIESEL ESTATE 2.0 TDCI 180 TITANIUM 5DR POWERSHIFT AWD

2 things concern me about this option too!
a) The Powershift gearbox and
b) The regen which I'm not used to.

I'm probably going to keep this car for a good 8-10 years, so don't want to get it badly wrong.

All informed comments welcome!

Regards,

John

Lots of complaints on the powershift, but getting the oil changed in the box sooner than the manufacturers recommended intervals should keep it happy.

Too many people treat them as sealed for life units and wonder why they have a shorter life than expected.

The diesel tows way better than the petrol car.

The regen just needs a decent run on the motorway occasionally. If you only do short journeys then the petrol maybe the better option. If you get a 20 minute motorway journey every now and then it will be fine.

But the torque of the diesel and midrange acceleration won me over. I was a petrol man but the Mondeo diesel has converted me.

Not sure what you mean by the petrol isnt FWD (front wheel drive)?

Got my acronyms mixed up. I meant AWD :-)

Yep, the diesels torque range is definitely just right, I was just wondering if the petrol/auto combination was usable for towing.

I've seen all the complaints about the Powershift which is making me nervous.

Thanks for the reply.

Whats the max tow with that autobox? Vans slightly heavier than cars unladen weight?

Vans 1491kg? Car 1489kg?

Ask the people with the problems if they have ever had the box serviced. I wonder how many will say its a sealed unit?

'Gearbox serviced'? Presumably if car has full service history from Ford dealer workshop then gearbox will have been serviced? It would be unwise to buy a modern car secondhand without a full main dealer service history, I would have thought?

75kg nose weight has put me off the new Fords, reports of poor fuel consumption on the 180 derv (39mpg)has also diminished my interest.

Having said that, our previous car (Mondeo 163 powershift estate) was probably the best car we have ever had, both for general use and towing (super stable), but never got over 40mpg in general driving and 23mpg towing.

A petrol Mondeo towing would struggle to get 20MPG.

unfortunately the gearbox service is an extra cost which the customer can decline but still get full service history stamp , ask to see a receipt for the PowerShift oil & filter change which should be done every 3 years or 37,500 miles.

Yes, a full service history needs to include all receipts not just a stamped service book. What makes a car ultimately a bad buy is when 'services' consist of just a Halfords oil & filter change & not much else.

That's exactly the problem, get the oil changed and they will stamp the service book.

You want receipts and as mentioned above proof the gearbox was done as well. Too many assume its sealed for life and needs no work.
Or they figure it will be sold before it gets to a point where it may fail.

I have the older MK3 Mondeo diesel and get 31 - 39mpg when towing.
