Been wanting to change towcar and looking at the older style Xtrail, we could use the extra boot space. Only thing is its listed on parkers as the same if not lighter than the CMax we currently have. I think our Cmax (1544kg allegedly) is probably on the limit for our caravan (1400kg) and really could do with something slightly heavier, although it has towed for two seasons here and there without much fuss. If....the kerbweights on the Xtrail are higher upto 1700kg i've read some places, I think it would be ideal. Does anyone have advice pros/cons for the xtrail?
Thanks
Ian.

we have a 05 xtrail 2.2dci tow a 96 crown sceptre. we tow this effortlessly, if you do get a good xtrail, and they can be hit and miss, they are really good tow cars, hardly ever drop out of 6th gear and get approx 32 mpg. as a friving vehicle on its own i would not have an xtrail [my wife drives it anyway]due to it be a little noisy and tinny although performance is actually quite good. just watch out for turbo issues.
I've been looking at all sorts, Tucson, Sportage, now the Xtrail is in there kerbweight depending! Also i noted xtrail has bigger load space than other small 4x4's which we need.
Personally i'd go for Mondeo estate but OH says she won't drive it and it'll be stuck every winter up here in Queensbury West Yorkshire. She has got a valid point i reckon.

Yeah looked on both these sites, auto evolution puts the Xtrail 'lighter' than the Cmax we currently have and Parkers puts it slightly above...doh? Only thing is i've read of people going to the weighbridge and getting figures of 1650kg plus?? This is really confusing...

As you are experienced then go by what you think the actual weights of vehicle and caravan will be at the time of towing it and do the percentages from that

My brother has an 05 one, snapped the recently changed CAM CHAIN towing back from Brean Sands, mechanic said never been known,so it must have been faulty, had everything replaced FOC as it was proved to be the case, mechanic took it for a test drive and the new chain failed again, wrecking the engine again, this time a reconned engine was fitted FOC,eight weeks without a car.
Apart from that,he loves it,but is now considering a Kia Sorento, voted an extremely good towing vehicle
Hi Nutkins if you need a 4x4 how about a Skoda Scout will tow your van no probs I had one for 5 years never gave me any trouble what ever the weather regular towed over the top Lanc,s /Yorks border A64. Garrowby Hill A165 even 69 Whitby. Solo could acheive 54 mpg about 30/35 towing 20l tdi just depends on your right boot kerb weight 1610kgs with driver and tank of fuel. Fold up back seats take a coffin in the back.
I am now on my second Xtrail and cannot fault them in any way the first one was a 2003 with the 2.2 engine we had that for 7 years without a fault and over that time did some 90.000 miles. At the beginning of this year we decided to change our car and bought another Xtrail a 2008 model with automatic box and I find this model even better and towing with automatic is great and I live just one mile away from you in Bradshaw Halifax a great tow car
