Anyone have any experience of towing with a 2.0 petrol engined Mondeo...? (54-56 plate).
I know the TDCi model is very good, we have one...
But ours is now quite old, & was retired from towing duties when the Galaxy came along. The Galaxy may be going as we downsize in readiness for losing the Wifes wage as she goes Uni to retrain as a Nurse.
I've seen some very nice petrol Mondeo's, & wondered if the petrol model has the oomph to pull a 1400-1500kg van very well.
Mine has covered 190k in the 8 years since I bought it
( I used to do 25-30k a year in my old job) and still tows our 1400kg van. It still does 50mpg without me trying on a solo run too. We're off to France again next year all being well.
Because it's just getting old really. It's on 160k now, & mechanically it does show. My main concern is being hit with a big bill from the DMF, Injectors, turbo etc. I'm thinking that a petrol might not have these expensive potential items to go wrong. We've had 4 years from her with nothing more than brake pads, an exhaust box & a turbo hose. The thought of it breaking down in France fills me with dread.
Might yet reconsider.
I'm kind of hoping for a company car soon, so....
My mate bought his wife a 2 ltr mondeo estate as they have a dog and needed a car to get to there chalet in north wales, every time he drives it he says it wouldnt pull you out of bed and its shocking on fuel, if it wasnt the fact that it was a unbelievable buy he would never of bought it. I'm sure he paid 7k for a 18 month old Tit X with about 20k on the clock.
He only gets 28 mpg on a run with 2 adults 2 kids and a lab, he does however drive a audi A7 so anything less will always get some stick
The petrol cars also have a DMF. So when you need a clutch it makes sense to change that as well.
So the bill will be exactly the same as a diesel clutch.
They do last longer in a petrol car but it will be costly to replace just the DMF if it did fail.
Dont forget the petrol cars are lighter, You maybe over 100%.
I used to get under 30mpg with lots of short local journey's
I sold it with 150,000 on the clock in 2009 and its still taxed now so i presume i sold it too early
Yes, I think your right.
Silly idea.
Toying with going back to the tent for a few years, while the Wife is at uni. Probably the best option in the long run. Might just go for one of the last older shape (06/56) shape TDCi Mondeos & stash a few hundred pounds away in case it goes wrong.
The Wife has laready intimated that the 167k 52' plate is not her preferred choice if we go to a single car.

That's a genius sentiment; where is the 'Like' button... :-)

2002 Ford Galaxy - Died & scrapped. Good riddance.

1998 VW Passat SE - Crashed into & scrapped
1997 Peugeot 406 GLX - PEx
Indeed, but we are going from two cars down to one so not actually spending more, just consolidating. We've all but decided the caravan & Galaxy have to go, so just looking at best option as whatever we do we still need a reliable family car, & the wife is adamant the Mondeo is too old to be relied upon as our only car.
Wife has suggested a Focus estate & us just getting a trailer for camping.
I'm somewhat at a dither knowing what to do. The thing is, that whilst it sounds a bit rough (aux belt tensioner rattle etc); on the road the Mondeo drives beautifully. It's never short of power. And when I've given friends a lift they have been amazed at how well it drives. It's a Ghia model so quite nice inside etc.
