We are looking to buy a newer car for towing a caravan, lightweight at the minute, but again looking to update that as well to slightly large - probably up to 1200kg. We currently tow with a 'Y' reg Zafira 1.8 - not brilliant but probably due to age.
We have looked at Ford C Max, Seat Altea and Citroen C4 Picasso. Has anyone got opinions on any of these or can someone suggest something else suitable? Ideally looking at a MPV style car - like to sit higher up.
All opinions/ ideas greatly received - getting confused looking.
If member "skodabob" picks this up, he will absolutely love it! But seriously:
Just a personal opinion based on 7 years of ownership, for the needs you describe, look no further than Skoda Octavia estate. (2.0 diesel)
If you like auto gear boxes (Which I do. Please do your own search on UKCS for many threads on the merits of autos for towing) the VW/Skoda DSG system is the best auto I've ever driven. (Again do your own research.)
The Skoda Octavia DSG is the only car I've ever unconditionally considered replacing with same.
The Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel, for me is a close second. Mondeo only let down by fuel consumption when mated with 'conventional', torque converter, fluid drive type auto gearbox.
If your choice is manual gearbox, for me, very difficult to choose between Octavia and Mondeo.
Hi Nickkky, for what it's worth, I tow with a 2 litre turbo diesel C-max. It's an old one '04, but it's a brilliant tow car, it's very stable and pulls like a train. It's quite economical, 30mpg towing and 45/50mpg not towing. Without the van (Bailey Pageant) it is surprisingly quick and is a good fun car to drive.
Just noticed you comments about liking to "sit higher up", having driven normal saloon types and mpv styles, exactly how much "higher up" you sit is minimal.
In every day use of both types, can't say I've perceived any real difference.
Just like to concur with member "slapheadgeoff" to say that, in general the Ford product is very difficult to beat. Unless you want an auto, in which case the balance swings in favour of V.A.G products with their DSG.
