Easiest way is to use a map first, plan your route for the easiest/quickest way using the biggest roads, if in the CC club read their access statement and finally take the sat nav as a back up only. Never rely on it with a van on the back !

The caravan club have an on line route planner but do not guarantee that it is caravan friendly.
Garmin and Snooper both do caravan friendly sat navs. Google them and there is also much info on sat navs in the various caravan forums.
Google maps and via michelin route planners are also very good.

I use Google Earth to look at what might be the more difficult parts of any routes. Then you can go back to the Sat Nav and take out those parts you want to avoid.
(I thing CC access statements are to do with access to facilities rather than the site)

A decent map book and google maps/street view for any bits that look like they may be difficult.
I will use a sat nav for en route directions but not planning.

I use mine to let me know how far to go - not for very much else at all.
We always have an atlas open when on holiday - they have so much interesting information on them that the "turn right in 100 yards" machine ignores.
