I've had a fleet of CRVs since 2002, petrol and Diesel.
Noseweights changed from 60kg to 100kg in 2005. Towing 1300kg Bailey Ranger, the petrol ones used to return approx 24mpg, the later 2.2 diesels about 30mpg. Note all these engines would have had less than 10k miles on them. The best consumption I've had from the diesel is 55mpg, stuck in slowish moving traffic for almost 200m. Worst from the petrol =19mpg towing through the highlands at altitude.
Tax is cheap for a 4x4 too - currently at £165
Oh - did I mention that CRVs are made in Britain and 5000 peeps in the Swindon area (and approx 25000 peeps in the UK) are relying on you buying the CRV ! ! ! !
thanks for all your replies,we like the santa fe,but looking up stats, the emmisions are very high, which put us off.the parkers guides say all others have no problems,is the tucson really that thirsty, the guide says up to 43 mpg? i really fancy the crv,its got about 140 horses, low emmisions and says it gets up to 45 mpg.the only other 1 we have thought about is a suzuki vitara, but the model we can afford seems to have a smallish boot, warranty isnt an issue as the age we get will be out of it.any other worth looking at???
The CRV is second to none for reliability. As I said though, not right for us as OH doesnt travel well and we didn't like the ride but if it suits, go for it!
We had a 1999 petrol CRV just for towing that had done 182,000 miles and was brilliant except for fuel used when towing, I started using it more on a daily basis instead of the focus estate. We now have the new CRV diesel as both a daily and tow vehicle and can't recommend it enough.
Reading other posts I am now confused about the towing capacity of the CRV. I am told it was 1600kg but is now 1800kg. In what year did this change as I want to get the higher rated CRV if that is our final choice of car.

There is some confusion. The Mk3 CRV (latest shape) has a noseweight limit of 100kg and will tow 2000kg - Diesel model (mine pulls 1450kg easily) The petrol powered engine will pull 1600kg. These figures are straight from the HONDA OWNERS MANUAL. Note the 85% guide from the Caravan Club indicates a max tow of approx 1350kg to 1450kg depending on model.
The Mk2 (02~07) changed 1/2 way through its life. Its always been max tow of 1500kg, but the noseweight improved from 60kg to 100kg at the 55 plate. Strange that 'cos its the same floorpan and engine? 85% same as above - 1350-1450kg
Most popular Press listings show the CRV with a max pull of 1500kg. This is for Germany models only. Their rules - not limits...
Can't comment on the Mk1. (Up to 51 plate - petrol engine only)
Hope this clears things up?
Any other queries don't hesitate to e-mail me - contact below

At the 2005 model year facelift the suspension was improved - it's less wallowy, and drives noticeably better (I've had a 2003MY and a 2006MY). That might account for the higher noseweight. All the diesels will have 100kg nosweight. The towing limit is lower for the petrol auto (1200kg).

Interesting, looked at Kia Sportage 6 speed 2 litre diesel -towing capacity 1800Kg
Seeing both cars have same body, same engine and gearbox, it would seem that the manufacturers' towing limits are a bit arbitary.
Don't always believe the handbook either. Had an early Vectra that showed 2 pages on how to fit and remove the removable towbar, yet no removable towbar had been approved for the Vectra at that time. Turned out the handbook had been translated from the Opel German handbook.
