Many thanks for all the help so far. I have had a new ball, although the place did not take off the black! After a querying phone call they are coming to my house to remove it as they say they should have asked at the time if I wanted it removed! This was worth the £33 to me as I could not have done it myself and the reason we have bought the bailey and traded in the folding camper is because my hubby is so unwell. - I have to organise all this. The 'place' ,said I could find out if my pads were shot by driving it to my next holiday - some 50 miles each way- if it creaked I wiould have to change the pads but having only done 200 miles in the wrong tow bar I might have got away with it what do all of you think. So far you have been a brilliant support thank you all.

If your bailey was new and came with the stabiliser fitted, you should have been supplied with a new alko twin bolt ball (although amazingly with the paint applied).

Don't spend money changing the pads, as already mentioned get someone whos a bit handy to give the pads a rub with some emery cloth or sand paper to remove any paint then beg or borrow some electrical degreaser and liberally spray this up the hitch to 'wash out' any grease or oil, roughing up the pads with the sandpaper will probably solve the creaking noise, my old 'blade type' stabilser used to do the same.
