First sign of a turbo about to fail is a whistling noise. It will usually cause a blue/white smoke as oil is pulled into the air intake through the turbo. For that reason, I would say that in my experience as a former professional motor mechanic the turbo is unlikely to be the cause.
Black smoke is caused by excess fuel. This is likely to be the injectors or the injection pump.
Either of these can be tested, but would need to be removed in order to get tested. Testing is not a DIY job and must be done by a diesel injection specialist due to the cost of the equipment required.
Injectors would be the first thing I would get tested as they are easiest remove (hense lower labour costs) and also cheapest to have repaired. If they are checked and found not to be the culprit then the injection pump would need to be checked.
Also check the timing belt. If the timing is out, it will cause black smoke. However, the odds are that if the belt has jumped a tooth, the engine wouldn't turn over, so timing is the least likely.
Good luck as unfortunately, it sounds expensive.
One question; have you been using bio diesel or vegetable oil? If so then the pump and injectors probably have been damaged.
One other cheap thing to check is the air filter. If this is blocked up then the engine cannot get enough air and will be running rich. This gives black smoke.
